Nicolas Baert will battle it out for the title in TCR Europe with Comtoyou Racing and Audi Sport

22.04.2021: • Seven meetings with one held at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium • Rookie champion 2020 up against strong competition in the major European Touring car competition.

•    Seven meetings with one held at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium

•    Rookie champion 2020 up against strong competition in the major European Touring car competition.

We only have a short wait before having the pleasure of enjoying some brilliant battles in TCR Europe, the most competitive European Touring car championship.

Among the entrants we also come across the Belgian Comtoyou Racing team, that is calling on the services of the promising young Belgian driver Nicolas Baert. Baert, a mere 19 years old, who became the championship’s 2020 Rookie champion, finishing in a strong third place overall.

“This season the ambition is to go full out for the title, but it won’t be an easy assignment. TCR Europe is an extremely strong championship with a highly competitive field” the young Waterloo based driver commented. Baert will be at the wheel of an Audi RS3 LMS TCR entered by Comtoyou Racing.

On 8th and 9th May enthusiasts of Touring car events will once again be able to enjoy the races to their heart’s content.   The TCR Europe’s 2021 season will then kick-off In Slovakia, a season comprised out of seven meetings, with traditionally two races of thirty minutes.

Following on from Slovakia the competitors will then travel on to Paul Ricard and Zandvoort, prior to Nicolas Baert taking on his home race. “We will be racing during the weekend of the 24 Hours of Spa, which is surely one of the highlights of the Belgian motorsport year”, Baert continued.

“As a Belgian with a Belgian team battling it out for victory on the legendary Francorchamps circuit is definitely something to look forward to. It is certainly the high point of my season.” The second part of the season takes off after Spa, with meetings at the Nürburgring, in Monza and Barcelona for the final round. “We hope that by then the Corona problems will have somewhat subsided and that the fans will be able to be present, because that is something I really do miss.”

Strong field and strong ambitions

Nicolas Baert is fully aware that the battle for the title will not be an easy one, but that is a positive fact. “I’m competitive, so if we once again start fighting it out with 20 or 25 cars it can but motivate even more”, the young driver added. “Allow me also to congratulate the organisers of TCR Europe on being able to bring together such a strong field of competitors in these difficult times.

The title in that field is the ambition, because improving on last year’s bronze medal implies finishing first or second. A sportsman wants to win, so the title is indeed my target. I obviously can no longer defend my Rookie title, but if possible, I would love to win the TCR Benelux again, it is a and remains a title on one’s record of achievements. “

Competition has already started

In the meanwhile Nicolas Baert already has a competition weekend behind him, with Olivier Muytjens’ team in the renowned yellow Toyota GT86. “Looking to the future the aim is to become acquainted with the Nürburgring. But in itself the experience was also great fun and after a second place clinched last Saturday, next time around I want to win our class! We are back racing on 1st May and I’m already looking forward to it!”

On 1st May Nicolas Baert will be competing in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie, followed by one week later starting off the season in TCR Europe on the Slovakia Ring Circuit.
