DAKAR 2013  Stage 11  Wednesday January 16th, 2013
1st start (GMT-3) : 9:15 AM

Despres strengthens his lead in the general standings

Cyril Despres now leads the Dakar 2013 by 13'16" from his team-mate Ruben Faria. 18'08" behind the leader, Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez still holds on to third place. Ivan Jakes did not have a particularly impressive day, losing 5 minutes extra to trail Despres by 23'33".

Alessandro Botturi, 29'32" behind the Frenchman, occupies fifth place in front of Juan Pedrero Garcia, 44'12" behind the race leader. Frenchman Olivier Pain in seventh is the first biker more than an hour behind Despres; 1:07'12" to be precise.

11:04 - bike
029 - Caselli wins the special

Behind the American who finished several minutes ago, Paulo Gonçalves has taken advantage of the problems encountered by his countryman Hélder Rodrigues, finishing 4'45" behind the winner.

Cyril Despres has finished in third place, 6'24" behind Caselli, Juan Pedrero Garcia in fourth, 10'18" behind the American, but 32 seconds ahead of Francisco Lopez.

Alessandro Botturi finishes in seventh, 11'31" behind the stage winner.

11:00 - bike
003 - Rodrigues in difficulty!

Second at the intermediate time checks since the beginning of the special, Hélder Rodrigues has stopped after 198 km. He is set to lose second place, due to mechanical problems.

10:56 - bike
029 - Caselli looks set to win

Unless Hélder Rodrigues completes the last section in record time, American Kurt Caselli should win his second special on the Dakar. For the moment, only three competitors have crossed the finishing line, namely Gonçalves, Despres and Barreda. Watch this space…

10:06 - bike
003 - Rodrigues in 2nd

Hélder Rodrigues has just achieved the second best time so far, 1'15" behind Kurt Caselli. Francisco Lopez is third, 2'06” behind the American. As for Alessandro Botturi, he occupies 7th place, 7'28" behind the stage leader.

10:02 - bike
029 - Caselli leading and opening the way after 174 km

Not content with being the quickest on the special, the American has also taken over the position of opening the way for the pack of bikes, ahead of Cyril Despres and Joan Barreda.

The positions on the tracks only partially reflect the stage positions, however, because whilst Kurt Caselli is indeed the quickest leading Juan Pedrero Garcia by 4'01" and Paulo Gonçalves by 5'16", Cyril Despres trails him by a little more than 7 minutes and Joan Barreda is 14'20 behind the American.

Hélder Rodrigues, Francisco Lopez and Alessandro Botturi have not yet reached this point, so these positions may change soon.

Stuck in the sand

Hans-Jos Liefhebber, No. 48, is stuck in the small section where many of the riders got lost at the beginning of the special. The Dutchman has been at a standstill for 40 minutes following technical problems. British rider James West is also halted in this zone after a fall that has led to a fuel leak on his bike.

The situation is the same for quad rider Tomas Maffei who is suffering from the same problem on the tank of his machine. A little further on, the Peruvians Bruno Chichiloza and Jacques Baron have also stopped together for an impromptu repair session.

09:17 - bike
013 - Mechanical problems for Farres Guell

For the last hour, Spanish rider Gerard Farres Guell has been at a standstill after 47 km to repair a mechanical problem on his Honda.

09:14 - bike
029 - Caselli takes charge after 120 km

The American is in top form today and has come through the main portion of dunes in front, with a lead of 18” over Hélder Rodrigues, 2'17” over Juan Pedrero Garcia, 4'05” over Paulo Gonçalves, 4'32” over Alessandro Botturi and 5'36” over Cyril Despres.

08:37 - bike
Caselli finds his way behind Rodrigues

After 83 km, American Kurt Caselli is currently the quickest rider on the special behind Hélder Rodrigues, who he trails by 1'41".

2'58" behind the stage leader lies his countryman Paulo Gonçalves in third, ahead of Spaniard Juan Pedrero Garcia, 3'12" behind first place, Italian Alesandro Botturi, 4'05" behind Rodrigues, and Cyril Despres, 4'51" behind the provisional leader.

Opening the way has not been an easy exercise for Joan Barreda who has lost 6 minutes so far.

06:28 - bike
After 30th place in the bike general standings…

Tim Forman is British and this is his debut on the Dakar. He is not doing too badly at all, seeing as he is still in the hunt to tackle the dunes in Fiambala. In 32nd place, he is close on the tail of Australian Warren Strange and one of his countrymen: Stanley Watt. However, he is dangerously exposed to those pursuing him:

Peruvian Felipe Rios is only 1 minute behind and Frenchman Alain Duclos, who is 7 minutes behind, must be have a terrible thirst for some sort of success, heightened by the frustrations he has suffered over the last few days.

This must also be the case for Kurt Caselli, in 36th place, ahead of Frenchman Romain Souvignet who occupies a respectable place in the top 40 before one of the final determining points on the Dakar 2013.

08:16 - bike
Wrong way...

Ivan Jakes little detour left a trace and plenty of other riders have made the same mistake at the same place behind him. Indeed, at this specific point, Slovakian Stefan Svitko has been at a standstill for several minutes and seems to have technical problems.

08:13 - bike
003 - Rodrigues navigating well

After 51 kilometres of the special, one quarter of the way through, Hélder Rodrigues is the quickest with a lead of 1'30" over Francisco Lopez, 2'47" over Paulo Gonçalves, 2'59" over Kurt Caselli, 3'07" over Cyril Despres and 3'19" over Juan Pedrero Garcia.

07:46 - bike
032 - Jakes makles a detour

There will be navigation on this stage and the first to come unstuck is Slovakian Ivan Jakes who headed east after 33 km, 5 km too early in relation to the road-book. Fortunately, he realised his mistake and altered his course to return to the right direction.

07:39 - bike
Start of the bike special

"First bike, No. 5, started on time" is the radio message that has just signalled the entry of Joan Barreda into the timed section, shortened by 30 kilometres. As result, today the special will be 191-km long. An important piece of news is that it is raining on part of the route.

06:19 - bike
Behind the leaders in the bike general standings (cont.)

25th before the rest day, 23rd the day before yesterday, 20th this morning... Michael Metge is continuing to make progress and at this pace, the Frenchman could lay a claim to a top 15 place in Santiago. This is also the goal of Dutchman Henk Knuiman, a former water carrier for Marc Coma, who has completed his previous eight participations on the Dakar in the top 20.

This morning he is 22nd. It is a different story for Argentinean Pablo Rodrigues, 72nd last year, who started out with the objective of doing better in 2013. "Cacha" is 26th just ahead of Joan Barreda and the Brazilian Jean de Azevedo who is taking part in his 14th Dakar, having returned to two wheels after several races in a car.

The Dakar car category was also the aim for Britain's Stanley Watt, who had hoped to be a co-pilot this year. In the end, he is behind the handlebars of a KTM which he has ridden into 30th place so far.

06:13 - bike
Behind the leaders in the bike general standings

The first ten riders are still grouped within a 45 minute bracket, but the others are not too far off either, including certain “fallen angels” of the 2013 edition. Unfortunately, we have not seen much of Pal Anders Ullevalseter.

He was seen in the top 5 during the third stage, but due to all the problems he has encountered this year, he has not been able to do any better. Like him, many other talented riders have also experienced misfortunes in the sand, from Javier Pozzolito, 11th, to Paulo Gonçalves, 17th, including Frans Verhoeven, 13th.

They all enjoyed a good start to the rally, or have put in a good performance here and there, but have not been able to reach the summit.

06:07 - bike
Destination: Fiambala

Joan Barreda and Cyril Despres are heading towards the star of the special, which was shortened by 30 kilometres, yesterday evening, for all the categories. The 133 bikes expected at the start this morning will have to travel just over 256 kilometres on the link stage before getting to grips with the dunes.

17:02
La Rioja-Fiambala: the return of the dunes

With a new sandy episode, the Dakar 2013 enters a third phase in which each competitor will need to adapt their driving or riding technique and overall approach to the terrain: the less attentive will leave themselves open to very costly navigation errors.

On a route that is slightly different for the cars/trucks and bikes/quads, the stage will include 256 km of link stage, followed by 220 km of special stage that will finish near the bivouac (with a small 6-km link stage). Sometimes, nothing happens around Fiambala… but it's very rare! On average, these dunes with their attractive contours often hold nasty surprises in store.

Anything is possible, including in the new dunes added to the programme. Whilst in most of the categories the positions are becoming increasingly more established, even if the gaps are small in some cases, there should be a certain amount of new developments by the end of the day.
