Loeb crashes out at SS11 and Ford move up to 2nd and 3rd

26.04.2008: Loeb crashes out at SS11 and Ford move up to 2nd and 3rd

Sebastien Loeb has crashed out of the lead of the Jordan Rally in the most bizarre circumstances.

Loeb was involved in a head-on accident with fellow Citroen C4 WRC driver Conrad Rautenbach on a road section close to SS11.

Nobody was injured in the accident, which happened on a narrow, blind bend as Rautenbach was approaching the stage and Loeb was leaving it.

Both cars received heavy front-end damage in the crash and will be recovered to the Dead Sea service park. It is not yet know whether Loeb or Rautenbach will return as Superally entrants for Sunday’s final day of the competition.

Ford move up to 2nd and 3rd

BP-Ford team drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Mikko Hirvonen say they would be happy to end the second day of Rally Jordan in their current positions.

With 134 competitive kilometres to tackle on the rally’s final day, neither Ford driver wants to take the lead away from Dani Sordo, and take his place as first car through Sunday’s loose gravel covered stages.

Hirvonen took one second and three third fastest times as he, too, maintained a strong pace on the morning stages. "I've made no mistakes but when I try to push hard it's difficult to gain time and I couldn't have done more than I did," he said.

"I couldn't believe it when I saw Loeb's accident. It was on a very narrow section of road just after a crest. I'm still thinking about my road position for tomorrow. Third in the start order would be ideal so long as I'm close to Sordo and Jari-Matti."

24.04.2008
The Jordanian stages are new to everyone as this is the first time the event has been run in the WRC It’s a strange surface in Rally Jordan, almost like tarmac it’s so hard but not with the grip of tarmac. It’s not going to clean very fast, and I think will be dirty like gravel for a long time. It’s so hard, I mean it’s like concrete, yet it’s still quite slippery more >>
