Khalid Al Qassimi deuxième au Koweit

KUWAIT INTERNATIONAL RALLY (20-22/03/2014) –
• Déjà sur le podium au Qatar, Khalid Al Qassimi et Chris Patterson terminent deuxièmes du Rallye du Koweït, après avoir mené en début de course.
• L’équipage de la Citroën DS3 RRC s’empare ainsi de la deuxième position du Championnat du Moyen-Orient FIA des Rallyes.
• Au volant d’une des cinq Citroën DS3 R3 de l’Abu Dhabi Racing – Citroën Middle East Trophy, Mohamed Al Mutawaa s’impose pour la seconde fois consécutive dans la catégorie « 2 roues motrices ».
Particulièrement compétitifs en début de course avec une collection de meilleurs temps dans Mesfir 1, Kheiran 1 et Kheiran 2, Khalid Al Qassimi et Chris Patterson occupaient la première place du classement général après les trois premières épreuves spéciales. Deuxième à seulement 12’’5 secondes du leader au terme de la première étape, l’équipage de la Citroën DS3 RRC montrait sa compétitivité sur les routes du Koweït.
« Les spéciales du jour se sont bien déroulées », commentait Khalid Al Qassimi. « Je remercie l’équipe qui a très bien travaillé pour préparer les voitures. Notre Citroën DS3 RRC était idéalement réglée pour ce terrain. Être aussi proche de la première place est de bon augure pour la suite du rallye. Il faut réussir à exploiter notre potentiel tout en évitant les problèmes. »
Avec deux nouveaux temps de référence, Khalid Al Qassimi restait au contact du leader lors de la seconde journée de compétition. Une crevaison en toute fin de rallye l’obligeait néanmoins à se contenter du second rang.
« Je suis heureux de marquer les points de la deuxième place, même si mon objectif était de gagner le rallye. Je reste pleinement concentré sur l’objectif de conquérir le titre de Champion du Moyen-Orient. Il faut donc marquer un maximum de points lors de chaque épreuve », concluait le pilote d’Abu Dhabi.
Les cinq équipages de l’Abu Dhabi Racing – Citroën Middle East Trophy ont mis à profit l’expérience déjà acquise pour se montrer performants et réguliers. Déjà vainqueur au Qatar, Mohamed Al Mutawaa dominait ses équipiers en début de rallye. Leader dans la catégorie 2 roues motrices, il s’emparait de la neuvième place du classement général après la première journée et conservait se position jusqu’au podium d’arrivée du rallye. Mohamed Al Mutawaa s’imposait devant Mohamed Al Sahlawi, Mansoor Bel Helei et Saeed Bintouq.
« Les spéciales étaient beaucoup plus roulantes que celles du Qatar », expliquait le vainqueur. « J’ai vraiment apprécié ce rallye, car il était parfaitement adapté à mon style de pilotage. Merci à l’équipe et à mon copilote Stephen McAuley, qui m’a largement fait profiter de son expérience. »
La prochaine manche du MERC se déroulera en Jordanie, les 1er et 2 mai. Avant cela, Khalid Al Qassimi et Chris Patterson seront au départ du Rallye du Portugal avec la Citroën DS3 WRC du Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team.
