Bernd Hiemer - The 2008 S1 World Champion

20.10.2008: Bernd Hiemer - The 2008 S1 World Champion

Two years after his first ever World Title German Bernd Hiemer of KTM Italia Miglio has finally clinched the S1 World Title making up for a tough debut season in the category last year.

The 25 year old German started his career in the GP scenario in 2003 at Monza, a fast course with a technical and fast slide section which remained deeply linked to Hiemer’s nickname Asphalt Surfer and to his superb riding skills on the tarmac.

The 2003 season ended with a 12th place in the Championship which is the same position Hiemer took in the following season due to a hand injury. In the meantime Hiemer grabbed the UEM European Championship in the S1 class in 2003.

In 2005 a new Bernd Hiemer came out as the likeable German moved to the works Red Bull KTM team and started to exploit all the chances of being a factory rider including the use of the special Red Bull training facilities.

Hiemer won the Austrian GP at Melk in dominant style collecting his maiden victory; the rest of the season was very consistent but he lost the title to Gerald Delepine in the last round at Latina finishing second with a small 9 point gap. On the other hand his team mate Thierry Van Den Bosch picked up an injury and finished third.

The private KTM challenge in between Hiemer and winningest Superider ever Thierry Van Den Bosch was looming but the 2006 season saw the Frenchman change both class and team. Hiemer won five GP’s and remained with the red plate on his bike from round one in Castelletto to round eight in Athens as he sealed the title at the penultimate round in Latina with victory.

With the SuperMoto classes swapping names at the end of 2006 Hiemer remained in the S1 class on the paper but he actually moved from an Open class bike to a 450cc. 2007 was a tough debut season for Hiemer who struggled to get to grips with the bike. Hiemer never saw the rostrum until he put together two back to back podiums in the final two rounds of the season to finish a distant fourth in the Championship.

It took him a year to find out the way to win the World Title again. Hiemer started off the 2008 season with solid performances and earned the red plate in Valladolid at the end of round three; since then the German kept riding solid and missed the podium just once in Andorra. After winning the title at the end of moto one in Greece Hiemer stormed to victory in heat two to secure also his first overall win of 2008 and the first ever GP win in this category.

Bernd Hiemer said: "I have made some mistakes this season otherwise I could have dominated it I think. Once I took the red plate I focused more on keeping it than on the GP victories, I wanted to be consistent basically. When I won the title at the end of moto one I was flat out in heat two, Thierry made a mistake and I won. I want to thank all my team, KTM, our sponsors and everybody who has been supporting us this year."
