Weiron Tan equaled his season-best finished and had two other points scoring finishes this weekend in the ATS Formel 3 Cup. After the long summer break, Weiron could not wait to get back in action with the Van Amersfoort Racing team at the mighty Nurburgring track in Germany.


He had a strong start to the weekend, setting the fourth fastest time in free practice, in which he was able to compete 22 laps of testing. He further impressed in qualifying, claiming the fifth fastest time in the Dallara F311 Volkswagen.


However, with third-place qualifier Sam MacLeod given a grid penalty for race 1, Weiron was promoted to a second row start from fourth. At the start Weiron powered into the lead, but was one of four drivers deemed to have made a jump-start and was handed a drive through penalty. He battled hard to salvage a result in the 30-minute race, and impressed by finishing fourth, equalling his best result of the season so far.


Weiron began race 2 from fifth, with the grid order set as the top eight reversed from race 1. He initially jumped up to second but was then handed another drive through penalty as stewards again deemed it to be a jump-start. He emerged in tenth after his drive through and worked his way up to ninth on lap nine. On the final lap he overtook Maxi Hackl to finish eighth.


In the final race of the weekend, Weiron started fourth, with the grid positioning determined by the second fastest laps from qualifying. He made a clean start and maintained fourth. In a race in tricky weather conditions he was passed by eventual podium driver Nabil Jeffri and Nicolai Sylvest and crossed the line in sixth.


After 15 of 24 races, Weiron maintains sixth place in the championship on 94 points. He is fourth in the rookie standings.




The ATS Formel 3 Cup returns to Lausitzring for the next round of the championship on the weekend of 12-14 September, supporting DTM.


Weiron Tan: “What looked like it should be a very good weekend turned out less than ideal. Our speed was good from first practice and our race pace was good. But what could have been at least two podium finishes didn’t turn out that way as I made unforgiveable mistakes in the first two races.


I’m disappointed with myself and blame no-one else. The car was great and the team did a great job so thanks to them. We must move on and make the most of the next race.”
