Dry training sessions, a sunny Grand Prix and a cloudless race finish in Monza

An exciting race in Northern Italy – who would have expected Fernando Alonso to drop out of the race for the first time since the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix? As UBIMET’s meteorologists had forecast, there were no surprises regarding the weather.

Even though 13 is often considered to be an unlucky number, the weather during the Grand Prix of Italy, held in the city on the Lambro river, was anything but grey and dreary.

Over the past few days, UBIMET’s meteorologists monitored the radar images at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza very closely. “The weather already held out during Friday's two training sessions – as we had known as early as Wednesday,” said meteorologist Steffen Dietz.

After twelve races, the UBIMET team and he know exactly what is important, when it comes to delivering weather forecasts for Formula 1. “Before the first training, there was a fairly thick cloud cover west of the track that brought some light rain but then moved away soon.”

F1 teams therefore had partly cloudy and – above all – dry weather throughout Friday. Meanwhile, to the north of the city that is home to about 122,000 people, a few showers formed in the humid and warm air that was in place across the region.

Perfect weather as Mercedes celebrated its first one-two since Spielberg

Saturday started partly cloudy with some middle level cloudbanks. Conditions improved rapidly towards noon so the third practice session was held in dry conditions that also continued throughout the day. “We were sure that the few clouds that we saw move across our screens would not interfere with the qualifying session,” add Dietz.

“The thundery showers that had formed to the north and east of Monza did not have any impact on the race.”

There was bright sunshine, just a few clouds and some light winds from the southeast when the Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton raced to the podium in the 53-lap Grand Prix.
