07.04.2017: Red Bull TV host Mike Chen and guest reporter Cyril Despres, plus WRC expert Matthew Wilson, are your guides to the legendary

Red Bull TV host Mike Chen and guest reporter Cyril Despres, plus WRC expert Matthew Wilson, are your guides to the legendary Tour de Corse, bringing all the action from round four of the championship to your screens with daily highlights shows and a live stage on Saturday.

The first day of the rally, with highlights dropping at 10pm CET tonight, only contains four stages – but they’re one hell of a ride. Each is around 30 kilometres long, as the competitors make their way across Corsica from Ajaccio to Bastia over twisty and unpredictable mountain roads.

Spare a thought for the people in the right-hand seat. For co-drivers, Corsica can be a serious headache: or rather voice-ache. With corner after corner after corner, they have to describe the road ahead – and all its hazards – non-stop to their drivers.

It’s not unusual for there to be around 25 corners in just one kilometre of Corsican special stage, so getting those pace notes right in plenty of time is more than essential.

Rumour has it that co-drivers practice tongue-twisters to improve their linguistic dexterity, so if you can say ‘Willy’s real rear wheel’ quickly and distinctly six times in succession, you’ve probably got what it takes to be a WRC co-driver…

So this week-end’s programme looks at the science behind the pace notes: the fast-paced directions from co-driver to driver that mark rallying out from all other forms of motorsport.

The drivers obviously steer, brake and accelerate – but it’s the all-important pace notes that tell them exactly how and when to do it. Both driver and co-driver write the notes together before the rally starts, driving through the stages a few days earlier at normal road speeds to familiarise themselves with the route and what to look out for.

As for the people in the left-hand seat, using some innovative on-screen graphics we compare the performances of the leading drivers both in Corsica 2016 and over the 2017 season so far.

Championship leader Sebastien Ogier won six stages in Corsica last year, with four stage wins in a row. Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville only managed one win, so he’ll need to up his pace to topple the reigning world champion this time.

But as our resident expert Matt Wilson says: “I can’t remember the championship ever being more open than it is now. Corsica is a proper rally that really sorts the men out from the boys, so with this year’s cars being the fastest in WRC history, it’s going to take some proper driving just to stay on the road this weekend.”

Red Bull TV will be there to capture every kilometre. Join Mike, Cyril and Matt tonight to see for yourself!

Bonus treats

For the low-down on pace notes, check out Mike’s take in the ‘Going Straight Sideways’ episode #2 on redbull.tv/wrc. They may look like hieroglyphics, but the notes make the difference between winning and losing!

One more thing: have you ever wondered how well drivers and co-drivers really know each other outside of their cars? To find out, look at our exclusive Facebook back-to-back interview, here with Elfyn Evans and co-driver Dan Barritt!
