F1 Chinese Grand-Prix
Shanghai International Circuit
Friday, April 7th 2017

An update from Free Practice in Shanghai as the track action begins for the second round of the 2017 Formula One season.

Shanghai is something of an overtaker's paradise due to the length of the DRS zones. As proof of that fact, last year's race featured a whopping 181 passing moves. The stat this year will give us a good indication of what to expect across the rest of the season...

That's the track, but the location also has another input into making us feel like the season starts here – its relative remoteness.

The circuit's Jiading district home is some 35km northwest of the beating heart of Shanghai and as such it can feel pretty removed from the action.

Given the extreme vagaries of Shanghai traffic, teams tend to cluster close to the track, which, to put it kindly, is less about banging industrial beats and more about crushing levels of heavy industry – and smog.

In Free Practice One running was heavily disrupted due to repeated problems with the medical helicopter. FIA rules state that if the medical helicopter cannot fly, or land at the local hospital, running must be suspended.

FP1 was therefore halted twice due to these issues. As a result, Daniel only clocked 7 laps on the time sheets and Max even fewer with 4. Despite this, the Dutchman still took the fastest time with a 1:50.491 and Daniel 1:54.038.

Unfortunately, due to continuing issues with the the weather, FP2 was suspended in its entirety and none of the teams were able to run in the second free practice session.

Max wasn't to be deterred by today's events however and had this to say about this to say about the day:

"The weather played a big part today meaning I managed just two timed laps, I did however top the time sheets so that is a nice positive.

We haven't been able to test anything on the car since Australia, and it's unfortunate that due to the delays today we just didn't get the running time we had hoped for, it also meant we don't have a lot of track data to review.

I understand the reasons behind not running, the weather simply meant the helicopter couldn't fly and that is integral to our safety in the case of an accident. The balance of the car seemed quite good in the wet but Ferrari and Mercedes weren't really running so we don't have a competitive comparison.

I think the forecast is looking better tomorrow so at least we will get some dry laps to try a few new things heading into Qualifying, for now the most important thing is laps, the more the better. For the fans it could be good tomorrow as everyone will be making up for lost time, so a lot of track action."

Daniel felt for both the Team and the fans after a difficult day in the wet:

"It's pretty frustrating that FP2 is over and we didn't get to drive but at least we managed a handful of laps this morning. It's a shame for us drivers but also a shame for the fans who have turned up today to support us.

At the same time I understand what happened and I do support the decision as safety comes first. The track conditions were fine but if someone was to have an accident and the helicopter couldn't airlift them to hospital then it could be a major issue.

The weather forecast looks a little better for tomorrow so hopefully we will be able to drive and get some practice in ahead of the race on Sunday. If it does rain on Sunday then the exciting part is that none of us have really done any wet driving yet which will create a more open playing field and potentially a very interesting race. I'm definitely ready to stop talking and start driving."

One race into an all-new era of F1 and debate around the success of the 2017 regulations already rages. Melbourne featured a tense battle between Sebastian and Lewis for the win – but a lack of overtaking throughout the field prompted questions about Formula One’s new regulations. Was this indicative of things to come, or just a one-off? The answer is a bit of both. more >>
