11.01.2018: DAKAR RALLY 2018 Stage 6 Arequipa - La Paz Thursday, January 11th, 2018

DAKAR RALLY 2018
Stage 6  Arequipa - La Paz
Thursday, January 11th, 2018

Stage modification

The first part of the special, with a passage at 4,700 metres altitude, has been cancelled for the bikes. The competitors are currently on the link stage that will take them to the second part of the special, which Joan Barreda will kick off at 16.30 GMT.

The stage has not been changed for the cars, so Stéphane Peterhansel will get things started at 13.30 GMT.

The day's withdrawals

The last stage in Peru left its mark on the rally. In the bike race, Aravind Prabhakar, Guillaume Chollet, José Israel Borrell and Jairo Segarra will not reach the finish.

Sébastien Loeb, Emiliano Spataro, Christian Lavieille and Ivan Shikhotarov have also exited the race in the car category, whilst in the quad race, Sergey Karyakin saw his hopes of keeping his crown crumble on the way to Arequipa. Lastly, two trucks, driven by Marc Leeuw and winner of stage 1 Ales Loprais, were not even able to start the special.

The Peterhansel Show

Stéphane Peterhansel will be opening the road today after a dominant performance in yesterday's stage. Leading the charge is difficult, but nothing that scares the veteran Peugeot driver. The overall leader can afford to enter Bolivia at a relaxed pace. Carlos Sainz, the only threat to his reign, has his work cut out for him if he wants to claw back some time. Keep an eye on Nasser Al-Attiyah as well. The Qatari has nothing left to lose, which makes him a serious contender for the stage.

The race is still wide open

The motorcycle category continues to feature big changes every day. Frenchman Adrien Van Beveren holds a slim one-minute margin in the general classification and will have to dig deep to defend his lead. Joan Barreda, Toby Price and Pablo Quintanilla have no choice but to throw caution to the wind to inch closer to Van Beveren, while Kevin Benavides and Matthias Walkner will pounce on the slightest mistake to seize the lead.

A change of scenery

The Dakar moves from Peru to Bolivia. Fast courses will take the place of the fields of dunes, while the Bolivian Highlands will give competitors something more to worry about: altitude. This daunting stage, which features a 313 km special and a 447 km liaison, comes right before the rest day.
