16.01.2018: DAKAR RALLY 2018 Stage 10 from Salta to Belen Tuesday, January 16th, 2018

DAKAR RALLY 2018
Stage 10  from Salta to Belen
Tuesday, January 16th, 2018

 10:29 Brabec loses his way

Ricky Brabec started in second place after Antoine Meo and has evidently chosen not to trust the Frenchman’s navigation, but this was perhaps a bad idea.

The Honda rider has strayed from the ideal route on the special and is currently 2 km away from the right track.

09:55 Meo starts the special

Antoine Meo is the first rider to tackle the day’s special. The KTM rider, who already boasts two stage victories this year, will open the way in front of Ricky Brabec, Toby Price and Kevin Benavides.

09:10 The day's withdrawals

Even with the cancellation of the ninth stage and the possibility of reaching the bivouac a day later, the eighth stage was unforgiving for some competitors.

Xavier de Soultrait had to exit the race, as well as Txomin Arana and Benjamin Melot. In the car race, Carlos Sousa will not reach the finish on his 18th Dakar and nor will newcomer Boris Vaculík. Finally, in the quad category, Giovanni Enrico and Suany Martinez will not be in Cordoba.

08:55 A tough link stage

The first bikes have completed the long 424 km link leading them to the start of the first special in Argentina. They set off from the bivouac in Salta at 4.30 AM. This early morning awakening could have an impact on the race today, especially since the weather is due to be hot.

 08:22 No margin for error

With 22 seconds between Adrien Van Beveren and Kevin Benavides in the general standings, the bike race is a long way from being won, all the more so given that Matthias Walkner and Toby Price are in with a chance as well as Joan Barreda, who will no doubt be on the attack today. Antoine Meo, Sunday’s winner, will be hoping to obtain a hat-rick with another stage victory, even if he has to open the way.

08:03 Dunes again... and more navigation!

he Dakar is already familiar with the details of this region... but not yet the dunes that the riders and drivers will have to tackle, nor the large sandy plateau that they will come across during the first part of the day. On their way, they will cross paths with the assistance vehicles heading to Belén, which will be authorised for the first time to intervene during the special.

Care must be taken, however, since the clock will be ticking! Finally, a navigation contest will take place in the last part of the special, as the competitors have to cross several river beds.
