16.01.2018: DAKAR RALLY 2018 Stage 10 from Salta to Belen Tuesday, January 16th, 2018 09:40 10-minute penalty for Sainz

DAKAR RALLY 2018
Stage 10  from Salta to Belen
Tuesday, January 16th, 2018

09:40 10-minute penalty for Sainz

The additional rest day imposed by cancellation of the ninth stage on the Dakar was marked by the “Carlos Sainz affair”. The rally leader was accused by Kees Koolen, an experienced Dutch rider, to have hit his quad when overtaking on stage 8.

It has been difficult to verify this racing incident, but the rally organisers have decided to inflict a ten minute penalty on the Peugeot driver. This has not profoundly changed the state of the race, but it does slightly reduce the Spaniard’s lead in the general standings…

08:40 No needless risks

With almost an hour’s lead in the general standings, Carlos Sainz has no need to take unnecessary risks on the way to Belén. Nasser Al-Attiyah and Stéphane Peterhansel are battling for provisional second place whilst hoping for a mistake from the rally leader.

Cyril Despres, totally free of pressure, will be on the look-out for a second stage victory this year.
