A very good weekend for B-Quik Racing in Rounds 5 & 6 of Asia Classic Car held at Sepang Circuit in Malaysia.

Henk J. Kiks planted our #27 Porsche 944 on pole during Saturday’s qualifying session and then won Sunday morning’s Race 1 in the wet while Aaron Liddell on his debut with the team wrestled his way to class victory in the first race after finishing an incredible P2 overall to give us a 1-2 finish and two class victories while in the second race he was back on the class podium again to wrap up the event in some style.

After a fairly lengthy absence from ACCC – we were last in action in the series back at the end of March when Asia’s premier classic car racing championship had then shared the programme with Thailand Super Series at Sepang – so we were clearly raring to race again!

Last weekend ACCC was running as usual as part of the Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) programme and it all kicked off for the classic racers on the Saturday with a half hour Free Practice session immediately following lunch.

However, our Dutch team leader knows this track inside out (he’s won the Sepang 12 Hours here as the absolute highlight of three podiums from three starts in the famous endurance race) while he’s been racing our classic “944” for a decade now – so he only needed a few laps during the end-of-afternoon 30-minute Qualifying session to whack in that time, which he set on the third of the four laps he completed, and which put him a healthy 0.824 seconds clear of the Nissan Silvia 180SX of Nick Tan which would join him on the front row of the grid for Race 1 at 0900 on Sunday morning.

Henk also claimed pole position in “Class O”, which is reserved for highly modified racecars.

We were pleased to welcome Aaron to the team for the weekend and he would be driving our #25 BMW E30.

The British driver made an excellent start in black-and-yellow as he posted a best time of 2:36.031 during the Qualifying session (which took place as the final session on Saturday’s programme, running from 1810-1840) to claim P4 in “Class MC” as well as a very strong eighth place on the overall grid.

Aaron set his quickest time on the fourth of nine laps he completed during the Qualifying session.

Race day morning – last Sunday – simply couldn’t have started any better as Henk and Aaron stormed to an impressive 1-2 finish in Race 1.

As is the way at Sepang, rain can arrive at just about any time – and there was a heavy shower just before the 20-car strong classic grid formed up leaving the track surface soaked and resulting in the organiser’s officially declaring the 10-lapper to be a “Wet Race”.

Henk, starting from pole position had a clear but wet track ahead and a snarling bumper pack of classic racecars lined up adrift. However, the Dutchman is more than used to winning in the wet here and he was his usual cool, calm and collected self as he started to grind out a lead at the front, which eventually stretched out to over 12 seconds.

With the race in the bag Henk eased off over the final couple of laps to take the chequered flag first, commenting after the race that the track had been really slippery and treacherous. The Dutchman also won the class reserved for the biggest beasts, “Class O”.

Aaron proved a real revelation in the conditions in our E30 on his first drive in the car and with B-Quik Racing. He steadily battled his way up the midfield having started from P4 in class and P8 on the overall grid to lock into a tussle for the lead of “Class MC” with Nurul Hasna Nasharuddin (Honda Civic EF) over the closing laps, the Englishman really revelling in the damp surface.

With two to go he had elbowed his way through and into the class lead – and that ferocious pace had in fact carried him up and into an astounding P2 overall, meaning the two black-and-yellow cars were the first two runners past the chequered flag after 10 laps of racing in slippery conditions, the pair separated by 2.407 seconds as Henk ahead backed right off and brought the venerable “944” safely to the finishline.

Such was Aaron’s pace that by the time the flag fell he had extended his advantage at the front of “Class MC” to four and a half seconds, a superb first time out with us as we locked out a 1-2 finish and two class wins.

Then it was onto the second and final ACCC race of the event, which came up immediately after lunch at 1240.

At the green lights Henk got a flyer of a start and it was ominously looking like he was going to make it two wins out of two – his rivals seemingly had nothing to offer in response to the pace of the #27 Porsche.

However, it wasn’t to be; classic car racing is also a perennial internal battle with the reliability of these decades old racing machines and an electric fault saw Henk’s race end abruptly on the fourth lap.

It had been going well too, Henk had just set the fastest lap of the race again on lap 3 in 2:27.324, but that would be it for the 944 for the weekend. It turned out to be a real race of attrition too as just ten cars were classified at the end of the ten laps.

Aaron however stepped into the breach superbly as he battled hard at the business end of the field for a second consecutive race – also a 10 lapper – seemingly he was already at one with the BMW. He finished second in Class MC, this time positions with the Honda EF of Nurul Hasna Nasharuddin would be reversed but that made it a P1 and P2 in class for Aaron in two races – superb stuff. Aaron also finished in an excellent P4 overall.

Now we immediately turn our attention to the fourth round of Thailand Super Series 2018 which takes place this coming weekend (31 Aug – 2 Sep) at Bira Circuit, Pattaya, where, this time, our young drivers will be taking centre stage.
