Racing for Belgium in FIA WTCC races at Monza

The Italian Monza circuit was the tenth meeting of the season for the WTCC-troops. Following on from a difficult summer, Monza represented a new start for Racing For Belgium. The Belgian team headed off down to Italy with full hope of a problem-free weekend and looking to score points in the Independents Trophy.

Miguel Freitas at the wheel of the Alfa Romeo 156 fulfilled his assignment perfectly ending respectively in sixth and fourth place (after the dsq fifth and third). All that is now left is for the Racing For Belgium Alfa to make the long journey to Macao during the middle of November.

"I’m reasonably satisfied with the result", Wim Coekelbergs, the team manager told us at the end of the weekend. "We didn’t experience any technical problems and came away with a reasonable result, but on the other hand we still have a fair amount of work to cover.

We experienced a pretty difficult period after the accident in Porto, with a fair amount of bad luck and a complete lack of intensive test sessions. And obviously what we are lacking at this moment in time is kilometres, kilometres and even more kilometres. On top of that Miguel does not know a single circuit of the WTCC-championship, which is an additional handicap."

"On the other hand this weekend the team has proved that we are able to retain the high competitive level in this competition and this opens up perspectives for next season."

Miguel Freitas finished the races on Sunday in sixth and fourth place and the young Portuguese could live with that.

Miguel Freitas: "Both in the first and the second race we reached the chequered flag without a single problem and what really pleased me was the fact that throughout the weekend we were permanently reducing the difference. Where in fact during the beginning of the practice sessions we had to give away a fair amount, we were able to substantially reduce that during the actual races.

Absolute proof that we are progressing and that is highly positive. We intend to carry on in this same way in Macao and score there also. At this moment I’m ninth in the Independent Trophy rankings and could possibly move up one or two places."

For Racing For Belgium the season is not over as yet. There are still two WSR Mégane Trophy races on the agenda, in Estoril and Barcelona, after which quite obviously the final of the FIA GT3 in Dubai and the final WTCC round in Macao, both being held during the weekend of 17th and 18th November.

Seeing the Aston Martin DBRS9 will already be travelling when the Belcar troops take on their final round at Zolder, the British GT will unfortunately not be present at Zolder.

Wim Coekelbergs: "We will in fact be travelling to the FIA GT3 final at the end of this season, being held in Dubai on 17th November. But unfortunately the trip to the Middle-East takes place before the Belcar final, hence the reason for our absence there."

Earlier this season Racing For Belgium competed in the FIA GT3 races in Silverstone, Monza and Brno and scored various top-10 places, which is an outstanding result in this highly competitive FIA GT3 field.
