US RaceTronics Wraps Up 2018 LSTNA Season in Italy Today

US RaceTronics Wraps Up 2018 LSTNA Season in Italy Today

16.11.2018: US RaceTronics entered the day in second-place in both the Pro and the AM Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championships but were still in position to pull off come-from-behind victories in both categories.

US RaceTronics entered the day in second-place in both the Pro and the AM Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championships but were still in position to pull off come-from-behind victories in both categories.

Unfortunately, neither championship was meant to be. The No. 150 Lamborghini of Beverly Hills started Round 11 in third and Round 12 in first but came home second in both races falling just short of what would have been Piscopo and Proto's second championship in as many years.

The No. 109 Lamborghini of Calgary was just six points back coming into the day but even with a win in Round 12 driver Damon Ockey was unable to overcome the deficit and finished second in the AM championship. Brian Thienes finished third in Round 11 and fourth in Round 12, which was more than enough to solidify his third-place LSTNA AM championship finish.

Edoardo Piscopo started Race 1 in third-place, but through great driving and a good pit-stop strategy, the No. 150 Lamborghini of Beverly Hills came out of the pit stop in the lead of an extremely competitive group of Pro class cars. Taylor Proto battled to hold off Madison Snow, but Snow was able to squeeze by in the closing laps of the race to take the win.

The Piscopo / Proto duo was able to successfully defend their position for a second-place finish. Race 2 saw Taylor Proto starting from the pole and Piscopo crossing the line first but a 0.372 second penalty for a pit stop infraction dropped the duo to second-place in the race and the LSTNA Pro championship. Piscopo was satisfied with the team's performance in their efforts to win the championship.

"Overall it's been a solid weekend so far," Piscopo said. "We knew we had a big gap coming in that we had to overcome. I believe that without the zero we had a Laguna Seca we would have won the championship, but this is racing and sometimes things go this way. I'm really happy with how Taylor progressed over the course of the season and I'm really excited to see him racing in GT3 next year."

Proto was disappointed with today's results but was consoled by the fact that other than the DNF at Laguna Seca, the team performed well all season.

"For today, obviously there's disappointment on the results side," Proto said. "We had a race win in the bag and probably could have kept our championship hopes alive if things had gone better for us in Race 1. But, they didn't. That's racing and now we just respond how we can. My congratulations and eternal thanks go out to crew and the team, because without them we wouldn't have been just seven points back, we'd have been much further.

A special thanks to Marco (Bielli) our engineer, because he did a fantastic job bringing us a competitive car all season. We did the best that we could and tried our hardest but sometimes racing gets in the way. It's a bit of a consolation to know that the reason we lost the championship is because of one DNF that was out of our control. Everything up to then the team did everything we asked of them and we did everything we asked of each other. But, that's what it is and that's how we respond and only now its on to next year."

When asked about his thoughts on the World Finals still to come this weekend, Proto added. "We're excited for the World Finals. I think they should be a good two races. We're hoping to upgrade our package a little bit for that and see what we can do and hopefully bounce back from some of the loses we've had this weekend."

Damon Ockey started Race 1 from the pole and led throughout the race until getting caught in traffic on the last lap allowing Ryan Hardwick to get past the No. 109 Lamborghini of Calgary for the win. Ockey was extremely disappointed with the result after having driven a perfect race up until hitting the traffic.

Ockey started P2 in the second race of the day and brought the car home with a win but was still two points shy of the AM championship. The Canadian driver is understandably disappointed to have not won the North American AM championship, but is already focused on the two World Finals races.

"We had a real shot at the AM championship and I'm disappointed to come away just a couple of points shy," Ockey said. "We had a little bad luck a couple of times that put us in this position but that's all part of racing. Overall we had a good season; we just didn't have the end result that we had hoped for. Now we'll focus on going out tomorrow and Sunday and winning the AM World Championship."

Brian Thienes started Race 1 in third-place in the LSTNA AM category and drove a flawless race to finish in that same position. Thienes maintained his focus throughout the race to hold off the fourth-place finisher and secure a third-place finish in the North American AM Championship.

Thienes also started Race 2 in third-place but had a more difficult race and ended up bringing the No. 117 Thienes Engineering Lamborghini of Beverly Hills home in fourth-place.

"We had a pretty good result in the first race of the weekend here in Europe," Thienes said shortly after Round 12. "Round 11 went pretty well considering the struggles we've had with the car setup this week, so I was pretty happy to bring the car home in third-place."

When asked about the second race, Thienes added. "Not the result we were looking for. I had a really bad start in traffic. Then made contact and had to serve a drive-through penalty. But overall happy with the result given all the problems throughout the race. Looking forward to better results in the World Finals."

Team owner Shane Seneviratne was disappointed to not come away with the championship but is proud of the effort his drivers and team put in all season. Now the team turns its focus to winning the World Finals.

"We would have liked to have walked away from the day with the three championships we were contending for," Seneviratne said. "But, it just wasn't meant to be. It was a little thing here or there throughout the season that if we had done flawlessly would have given us the championships we were capable of winning.

Losing the Pro championship by seven points, the AM championship by two points and the team championship by two points hurt but I'm incredibly happy with how well the team performed this season. We're going to work on all the little details and learn from our mistakes this year and strive to come back strong next season. For now, we'll see what we can do to get the best results in the World Finals."

AM qualifying is from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. local time tomorrow, Saturday, November 17, 2018, while the Pro qualifying is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. (all times local). The first round of the AM World Finals goes green at 1:25 p.m., with the Pro race kicking off at 3:05 p.m. local time.

The final races of the season are Sunday at 9:55 a.m. for the AM class and 2:20 p.m. for the Pro class. Watch all four races on live streaming at: https://squadracorse.lamborghini.com/live-streaming.
