Formula 1 - Round 2 - Bahrain Grand Prix 2019

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II - Lens: 500mm

In the Bahrain desert, all eyes were on Ferrari newcomer Charles Leclerc who – just a year after his F1 debut – qualified on pole position for the very first time.

I was in the paddock at the end of the session, so I decided to walk to the driver interview zone and wait patiently for the day’s fastest man. The area was peppered with a few palm trees decked out in fairy lights which added a nice touch of colour in the dark.

Getting the right shot wasn’t easy. The zone is reserved for TV interviews and photographers are kept to one side, so I had to find a big enough gap in the row of journalists and cameras in which to poke my 500mm lens – the biggest I had with me – and try to capture a little of the emotion, while taking the setting into account.

I managed to find a spot where Charles had his back turned to me. The interview was bound to come to an end at some point, however, and I was ready for the moment he would walk away. I was fortunate in that he turned in my direction, with the lights framed in the foreground.

A fleeting smile barely revealed the satisfaction of the young Monegasque who is as humble and reserved as he is talented.

Florent Gooden
