•    Andrew Jordan scores double victory on return from Donington accident

•    Colin Turkington moves top of the Drivers’ Championship

•    BMW up to second in the Manufacturers’ standings

The BMW 3 Series continued its impressive start to the 2019 British Touring Car Championship as Andrew Jordan secured two victories in a dominant performance at Thruxton.

The BMW Pirtek Racing ace was back in action following a sizeable accident at Donington Park last time out, piloting his rebuilt 330i M Sport to a pair of commanding wins in Rounds 7 and 8 at the Hampshire circuit.

Meanwhile, West Surrey Racing star Colin Turkington moved top of the Drivers’ standings with a consistent display around Britain’s fastest racetrack. The Northern Irishman came home fourth in the opening race before pushing Jordan all the way in the next bout, marking his 400th BTCC appearance with second place.

Tom Oliphant also made it into the points with a battling drive in the second race of the day before carving his way through from 14th to seventh in the reverse grid event, finishing off a successful afternoon for the BMW squad.

Jordan was the leading BMW star in qualifying, putting his 3 series third on the grid for the opener behind Sam Tordoff and Dan Cammish. The 2013 champion was also fastest out the blocks when the lights went out, jumping Cammish off the line and tucking in behind Tordoff. Jordan kept on the tail of Tordoff’s Honda until lap 13, when he was perfectly positioned to pounce into the final chicane to take the victory.

The 29-year-old’s second success of the season was a perfect comeback after his unfortunate Donington Park accident, which caused considerable damage to his BMW and ruled him out for the remainder of the race day.

Meanwhile, Turkington continued his consistent start to the campaign with a serene drive to fourth in the opening race of the day – finishing exactly where he had qualified.

Things weren’t so smooth for Turkington’s West Surrey Racing team-mate Oliphant, who started tenth but was handed a drive-through penalty for overshooting his grid slot and had to fight his way up to 23rd from the back of the pack.

Jordan flew off the line from pole in race two despite carrying full ballast while Turkington also enjoyed a brilliant getaway, leapfrogging Cammish and then muscling past Tordoff into the complex.

The three-time champion closed right up to the back of team-mate Jordan but opted to ease off in the closing stages when rain threatened, ensuring a comfortable one-two finish.

While the leading BMW’s came home line-astern, Oliphant salvaged an impressive points finish from 23rd on the grid after a thrilling tussle with Daniel Rowbottom and Stephen Jelley.

The WSR driver came 15th on the road but was subsequently promoted to 14th after Tom Chilton received a post-race penalty, having failed to serve a drive-through.

After a stellar start to the day, Jordan endured disappointment in the reverse grid race when, having lined up 11th, the Pirtek star was hampered by contact between Rob Collard and Adam Morgan on lap one. A safety car was deployed to remove Morgan’s stranded race car but Jordan was then spun around at the Complex on the restart after contact from Jelley and eventually came home in 17th.

As for Turkington, the defending champion lined up tenth on the grid for the final race of the afternoon and was involved in a tense battle with Cammish, Plato and the fast-starting Oliphant.

Both WSR drivers pulled off some opportunistic moves as they battled for position around the sweeping Hampshire circuit, with Oliphant eventually coming out on top as he brought his ballast-free 3 Series home in seventh – two spots ahead of Turkington.

The results see Turkington move top of the Drivers’ Championship, level with Butcher on 102 points but ahead on race wins.

The BMW squad will be back in action on June 15/16 when the BTCC visits Croft for Rounds 10, 11 and 12.

Jordan shoots up to ninth in the overall standings, just 37 points off his team-mate while Oliphant is currently 15th in the order. BMW have climbed up to second in the Manufacturers’ Championship and Team BMW sit third in the Teams’ Championship.

QUOTES

Colin Turkington, Driver, Team BMW, said:
“It’s an absolutely fantastic result for the team, we couldn’t ask for any better than a one-two. Race two was my 400th race as well apparently, so it was nice to sign that out with a podium. It’s a lot of races and it’s a nice milestone. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this championship and long may it continue.

We had a nice result with P4 in the first race but I really had to work hard to keep things nice and consistent. We moved the car in the right direction and I felt strong in the second one… as a driver it’s always nice to feel fast.

I’m really happy – it looks easy out front but it’s not when the pressure’s on. I’m delighted for all of Team BMW and especially for Andy’s side – they’ve had a tough few weeks in between Donington and this one so great work from everybody. Plenty of reason to celebrate today.”

Tom Oliphant, Driver, Team BMW, said:
“Overall I’ve been really pleased with how I’ve driven, and really pleased with how the car’s been. I think we’ve made big steps forward as a team and everything was going to plan until I had my drive-through for parking too far forward at the start of race one.

"It just made my life a bit harder, but to come through from last all the way through to seventh over the three races I’m really pleased with, and in my last race running comfortably inside the top 10 with no problems whatsoever.

“I feel like the team deserved me to finish inside the top ten three times, but because I was starting a bit lower down we tried something radical with the set-up in race three and I felt like that was a big step forward. Out of every cloud comes a silver lining.”

Andrew Jordan, Driver, BMW Pirtek Racing, said
: “Credit to BMW and to West Surrey Racing, because the car was in a sorry state after Donington Park. But that’s how we bounce back, that’s how we do it. The accident was a bit of a knock to the confidence, so to come back and do that… I love Thruxton, I love West Surrey Racing and I love the BMW 3 series.

“Race Two was tricky with the weight in, and in a way it was good that I had Colin behind because the weight hurt the balance of the car. But a BMW 3 Series one-two, the first of the year!

"I can’t remember the last time I did a race one and two double, so yeah we’re on form. Good team, good car, good drivers and we’ve hit the ground running.”
