TCR Russia @ Smolensk -Bragin retakes the leadership in the standings

27.06.2019: Dmitri Bragin has not won three consecutive TCR Russia titles by chance. At Smolensk, in the third event of the season, Bragin reasserted that he's not only one of the fastest drivers in the field, but also the smartest.

Dmitri Bragin has not won three consecutive TCR Russia titles by chance. At Smolensk, in the third event of the season, Bragin reasserted that he's not only one of the fastest drivers in the field, but also the smartest.

He turned a difficult qualifying into an eighth place in Race 1 that defended tooth and nail because it meant the pole for Race 2. And when leading the second race, he left victory to a recovering Kirill Ladygin to secure a second place that helped him to retake the leadership in the standings from Aleksey Dudukalo.

At the start of Race 1, pole sitter Andrej Maslennikov kept Pavel Kalmanovich at bay; behind them Ivan Lukashevich and Mikhail Grachev made contact and the latter retired.

The incident helped Dudukalo and Klim Gavrilov to move up into third and fourth respectively. The Kalmanovich made a mistake, which promoted  Dudukalo and Gavrilov to second and third. In the fight for the eighth position, Bragin frustrated Lukashevich's attempt and secured the pole for Race 2.

Ladygin and Bragin delivered a thrilling fight in Race 2. At the start, Bragin took the lead from the pole. Lukashevich overtook Ladygin for third and then they both passed Kalmanovich moving up to second and third. Ladygin stole second from Lukashevich and closed the gap from Bragin.

On lap 9, Ladygin took the lead after a couple of contacts; on the following lap Maslennikov and Grachev crashed and the safety car was deployed. When the race resumed, with four laps left, Bragin rejected Lukashevich’s attack at Turn 1, the latter lost momentum and Kalmanovich passed him to take his first podium result in the championship.

TCR Russia will return into action at Kazan on July 13/14.
