Crucial mid-season Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia clash to be played out in foothills of mighty Mount Fuji

03.07.2019: The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia roars to life in Japan again this weekend, this time with a return to the foothills of the mighty Mount Fuji for a thrilling double-header

The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia roars to life in Japan again this weekend, this time with a return to the foothills of the mighty Mount Fuji for a thrilling double-header at Fuji International Speedway.

Round 3 marks the mid-point of the Asian rounds of the championship’s auspicious eighth season, with two further rounds in South Korea and Shanghai before the fleet of Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evos heads to Europe for the series and World Finals in Jerez, Spain.

After the first four races of the 2019 season, all four titles – Pro, Pro-Am, Am and Lamborghini Cup – remain wide open.

FFF Racing Team’s Juuso Puhakka and Takashi Kasai lead the points charge in the Pro category, having reached the podium in all four races thus far. At Suzuka Circuit less than two weeks ago, Puhakka, who is part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse Young Driver Program, and Kasai won the opening race, with a second-place finish in Race 4.  The pair head to Fuji looking to extend a narrow six-point lead over Pro rivals Evan Chen and Chris van der Drift of Gama Racing.

Chen, who is also part of the Young Driver Program, and van der Drift have won three of four races this season. However, a technical infringement in last month’s opening race at Suzuka denied the pair a perfect run of victories and – crucially – championship points.

Hong Kong’s Alex Au of Vincenzo Sospiri Racing leads the competitive Pro-Am class, the Am driver having celebrated his maiden outright victory in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia last month at Suzuka Circuit with teammate Yuki Nemoto. Au and Nemoto reunite to race in Fuji where they’ll look to extend their class lead.

Hojust Racing’s Afiq Yazid and Toshiyuki Ochiai are just four points behind Au in the Pro-Am standings. The Japanese team is one of several racing on home soil this weekend, and the strong local contingent will out to impress.

Squadra Corse Young Driver Brendon Leitch lies third on the Pro-Am points table. The New Zealand driver and his Leipert Motorsport teammate Massimo Vignali arrive in Fuji after a strong weekend at Suzuka. Fellow Squadra Corse Young Driver Richard Muscat again teams up with Daniel Stutterd at GDL Racing, with the Australians still on the hunt for their maiden Pro-Am win of the season. Joining the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia for the first time this season are Henry Kwong and Max Wiser of D1 Racing Team.

Having taken three consecutive victories, T Squared Racing driver Huilin Han leads the Am class charge ahead of Thai brothers Sarun and Saravut Sereethoranakul who, having reached the Am class podium both at Sepang and Suzuka, are looking to earn their maiden season victory for PSC Motorsports.

FFF Racing Team driver Steven Lin scored his best finish of the season last month at Suzuka and is on the hunt for his first win of the season. Racing as another solo effort in the Am class is Thailand’s Bobby Buncharoen of True Visions Motorsport. He is joined in the Am category by Aylezo Motorsports drivers Zen Low of Malaysia and Italian Angelo Negro. Having made their 2019 season debut in Suzuka, Japanese drivers Satoshi Furuta and Jun Tashiro return to the championship for the two races at Fuji Speedway.

With three victories, the all-Hong Kong pairing of Paul Wong and Clement Li of 852 Challengers have built up a strong lead in the Lamborghini Cup. However, the fiercely competitive category also saw a winning performance from Japanese drivers Takamichi Matsuda and Dai Yoshihara of yh Racing Team last month at Suzuka, with the #30 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo looking to score another victory at home.

Also contesting the Lamborghini Cup are Kumar Prabakaran of Vincenzo Sospiri Racing and GDL Racing driver Gabriele Murroni, both competing as solo efforts.

The 4.563km Fuji International Speedway is an FIA Grade I circuit nestled in the foothills of Japan’s tallest peak, Mount Fuji. Round 3 of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia gets underway with two hour-long free practice sessions on Friday, July 5. On Saturday, July 6 the weekend’s two 15-minute qualifying sessions will take place in the morning ahead of the opening race at 13:30 local time (GMT+9). Race 2 is scheduled for Sunday, July 7 at 10:10 local time (GMT+9). Both the weekend’s races will be live streamed on https://squadracorse.lamborghini.com/
