•    The DTM will be breaking new ground at Assen’s TT circuit as the race that marks the half way point of the 2019 season gets underway (19th-21st July); the 4.54-km track is on the DTM calendar for the first time.

•    The new generation of cars should reach top speeds of up to 265 km/h (275 km/h with DRS) at the circuit.

•    The fifth race weekend of the season marks the midpoint in R-Motorsport’s first year in the DTM

•    Dr Florian Kamelger: “While everyone in the team is working hard to improve performance, we expect to have another tough race at Assen but would obviously be delighted if our drivers finished in the Top Ten”

The second half of the season is about to begin. R-Motorsport will get its fifth race weekend started at the TT Circuit in Assen as the outfit continues to take its first steps in the DTM.

It’s been just four and a half months since the new Aston Martin Vantage DTM had its first outing with the rollout at Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain, and this weekend, R-Motorsport will soon be embarking on the second half of the team’s first season at Assen. Time seems to have literally gone by in a flash.

The new car was born in early March after just 90 days of development and construction time and first lined up on the grid at the DTM season opener in Hockenheim exactly two months to the day later. Paul Di Resta promptly qualified third and posted the car’s first kilometres in the lead the following day in what was only the team’s second DTM race. Daniel Juncadella scored the first points with the Aston Martin Vantage DTM in its very first race.

During the first half of the season, the team have scored at least one point from six of the eight races held so far, and at the same time, all four drivers from R-Motorsport’s squad have racked up points as we reach the half-way stage in the season, including the two DTM rookies, Jake Dennis and Ferdinand von Habsburg.

The team will start the second half of the season at Assen’s TT Circuit and focus in particular on getting better acquainted with the setup and handling of the Aston Martin Vantage DTM while applying experience gained during the first four race weekends. The track is new to all the manufacturers and teams, since the DTM has never raced at Assen before, so everyone will be starting from the ground up and will only be able to use data from simulations as they make their preparations.

The 4.54-km circuit is especially famous as a motorcycle race track and is something of a Mecca for all MotoGP fans. Drivers at Assen will reach speeds of up to 265 km/h (275 km/h with DRS) with the new DTM vehicle generation. The longest straight is 560 metres in length and drivers will have to change gear 32 times per lap. At 265 km/h (without DRS), Ramshoek is the fastest turn on the entire DTM race calendar.

The slowest part of the circuit (Strubben) is taken at 70 km/h. A special feature of the track is that all turns are slightly banked.

Comments about the Assen race weekend

Jake Dennis:

“I think for my rookie season I’ve done a good job so far. I haven’t made any big mistakes and when there was an opportunity to score points, I took them, for sure! I was a bit unlucky at times, but overall, I’m satisfied with my debut in this championship and my performance to date. I was lucky enough to race at Assen in 2012, which is quite some time ago. I was still competing in Formula Renault then, but I’ve got some terrific memories of Assen – after all, I took pole position and the win there.

One of the highlights of that weekend for me was just how many spectators came along. It was something I was not used to at that stage in my career – it was super! Hopefully, it will be the same for the DTM weekend. At the moment, we have to remain realistic as far as expectations go. I think that we can be happy if we come away with points, as that would mean we’ve optimised our package.”

Paul Di Resta:

“My personal record at the half-way stage before Assen is clear. It’s been a season full of highs and lows so far, but we had expected that, after all, our Aston Martin Vantage DTM was developed and built in just 90 days. We’ve had no time for development and have to view every race weekend as testing.

My season started very well with third place in qualifying for the first race and a result in the points, but the races since then have shown that we’ve still got a lot of work ahead of us. We made some progress last time out, and the team worked extremely hard to achieve that. It’s not easy to say how our Aston Martin Vantage DTM will perform at Assen. It’s a new circuit, and we only have data from simulations. However, we’ll do all we can to score points again. That has to be our goal.”

Ferdinand von Habsburg:

“My season so far can best be described as exciting. In many ways, it went better than I’d anticipated and was much worse than expected at times. My first points-scoring finish at Zolder was certainly one of the highlights for me. After a strong weekend at the Norisring, I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.

I’ve already raced at Assen in Formula Renault and achieved a podium back then. I enjoyed the track a lot in my single-seater racing car, so I’m really looking forward to finding out what it feels like to drive a high-performance car like the Aston Martin Vantage DTM.

There are plenty of run off areas, especially on the first sector, so we’ll have lots of different lines to try out, for sure! The last sector is super fast. You need a great deal of courage to master it, which should make posting a lap even more exciting!”

Daniel Juncadella:

“I feel I’ve made huge progress over the season. We’ve built a strong bond within the team and are developing a car that’s been born premature. And from that perspective, I’ve been very satisfied so far and am fully motivated to continue to do everything we can to achieve our goals. I’ve never raced at Assen before but already like the track. I’ve driven around it in my simulator and think it’ll be a lot of fun for us drivers.

There’s a good mix of fast corners, which is always fun. I have no particular expectations for the two races at Assen, and that’s actually how I’ve approached every race weekend of my career for quite some time now. I take things step by step, session by session.

I have a lot of goals in mind but my primary aim is to build a good relationship with my engineers and mechanics from first practice to the races. Only in that way can you get the 100 percent out of the car that is available to us. I’m pretty certain that we achieved that last weekend, so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t do it again in Assen.”

Dr Florian Kamelger, Team Principal

“Assen is a completely new challenge for us with its special track characteristics and series of very fast turns. The circuit, on which the DTM will be making its debut, has a completely different set of challenges to the Norisring where we were able to score points on both race days just recently.

However, those results cannot hide the fact that the competitiveness of our technology package still does not yet meet our expectations. While everyone in the team is working hard to improve performance, we expect to have another tough race at Assen but would obviously be delighted if our drivers finished in the Top Ten.”
