Daniel Lloyd’s third place is turned into victory as the winner is excluded and the second is dropped

03.08.2019: TCR EUROPE Oschersleben, Germany – Rounds 9 & 10 Daniel Lloyd inherited the victory in TCR Europe’s Race 1 at Oschersleben after the first and second drivers classified were both penalised by the Stewards.

Oschersleben, Germany – Rounds 9 & 10

Daniel Lloyd inherited the victory in TCR Europe’s Race 1 at Oschersleben after the first and second drivers classified were both penalised by the Stewards.

Andreas Bäckman, who had been the first driver to take the chequered flag, was excluded after his car was found not to conform with the technical regulations during the post-race checks, as the front end of the car exceeded the maximum width of 1950 mm.

As for Nelson Panciatici, second at the end of the race, he was given a 30-second time penalty for punting Jessica Bäckman into a spin at T1 after the start. The penalty dropped him to tenth.

And so, Lloyd, who had crossed the finishing line in third position, was promoted to race winner, with Tom Coronel and Josh Files promoted to second and third respectively.

Before the post-race drama, it seemed that A. Bäckman had converted his pole position into his maiden TCR Europe victory. After proving the fastest in the morning’s Qualifying, the young Swedish proved the smartest in the race. Having been pipped at the start by Daniel Lloyd he didn’t panic and followed the Briton closely, putting the pressure on him in every corner.

Eventually this pressure forced Lloyd to make a slight mistake with only two laps to go; Bäckman was ready to grab the occasion and passed him to take the lead.

Nelson Panciatici, who had followed the two leaders closely, waiting for an opportunity, benefitted from the situation and moved up into second, while Lloyd managed to salvage the third position ahead of Tom Coronel.

As far as the title fight is concerned, Files’ third place ahead of his new teammate and Touring Car rookie Dominik Baumann meant that his leading margin in the standings has increased to 61 points ahead of Julien Briché, while Mat’o Homola is lying third one further point adrift. Local hero Luca Engstler, who was second in the classification before today’s race, was eliminated in the multiple collision of the first lap.

The second race will start tomorrow at 13:30 with Alex Morgan and Josh Files sharing the front row of the top-ten reverse grid; live streaming at and

Andreas Bäckman in a league of his own

Andreas Bäckman claimed his maiden pole position in TCR Europe and did it in an impressive way. The Swedish driver set the fastest lap in both, Q1 and Q2, leaving the rest of the field far behind. Daniel Lloyd and Santiago Urrutia qualified in second and third positions respectively, but with gaps of three and four tenths from the pole sitter.

Josh Files, the current leader of the standings, settled in a ninth position that will grant him a spot on the front row of the top-ten reversed grid for Sunday’s Race 2 alongside Alex Morgan who will sat on pole position. Luca Engstler barely advanced to Q2, but then was nailed in the pits by a technical issue and qualified 11th. Julien Briché was far off the pace and qualified in a disappointing 22nd position.

In Q1, Andreas Bäckman clocked an impressive 1:30.078 in the late stages, inflicting a gap of six tenths to the rest of the field. Just before the end, Nelson Panciatici moved into second with a lap of 1:30.674. The following drivers advanced to Q2: A. Bäckman, Panciatici, Morbidelli, Lloyd, Baumann, Magnus, Morgan, Urrutia, Coronel, Files, Engstler, J. Bäckman.

In Q2, Andreas Bäckman made clear he wanted the pole with a provisional fastest time of 1:30.334 on his first lap out. Morgan (drive shaft) and Coronel (power train) pulled over, while Morbidelli (radiator) and Engstler (steering rack) sat in the pits and could not post a valid lap time. A. Bäckman set the matter with another faster lap of 1:30.017; Urrutia (1:30.407) and Panciatici (1:30.503) improved as well moving up into second and third respectively, but then Lloyd posted the second fastest lap of 1:30.350, demoting them by one place.
