Amici and Mitchell earn overall win at Road America; Chad Reed wins in LB Cup

“America’s National Park of Speed” provided the perfect backdrop for the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America championship to showcase the single-make series in Saturday’s first race of Round 3 for 2019. And the action didn’t disappoint.

Nineteen cars in four classes took the green flag for the race at Road America, the famous 4.048-mile permanent road course in the Kettle Moraine of east central Wisconsin. Fifty minutes and two full-course cautions later, race champions were crowned in the four classes – including a new winning duo in the Pro class.

Andrea Amici and Sandy Mitchell from Prestige Performance/Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus took advantage of the timely first caution to grab the overall lead that they wouldn’t surrender. Damon Ockey and Jacob Eidson (US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Vancouver) finished second overall and first in Pro-Am.

McKay Snow from Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte, rolled to his third win of the season in the Am class and took third overall. In LB Cup, motocross superstar Chad Reed and teammate Justin Price were victorious for the first time in the No. 22 from Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini Atlanta entry.

Pole winner Paolo Ruberti jumped to the lead at the start of the race in the No. 27 Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini Dallas and maintained the Pro advantage over Richy Antinucci in the No. 29 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte.

As the mandatory pit window opened, some further back in the field opted to make early stops and driver changes. One of those was the No. 1 with Amici turning over the seat to Mitchell. It proved to be the move of the race when, shortly after, the left rear wheel on Ruberti’s race-leading No. 27 came loose and he slid into the gravel and tire barrier in Turn 9.

That brought out the first full-course caution with 27 minutes remaining. Antinucci took the lead after Ruberti’s mishap, but the No. 29 had to make its mandatory stop under green with 11 minutes left so that Corey Lewis could take over the drive. That handed the lead to the No. 34 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Beverly Hills entry with Patrick Liddy and he made his mandatory stop a lap later and was replaced by D. Bryce Miller.

The cycle of stops pushed the No. 1 to the top with eight minutes to go and Mitchell kept it clean to the checkered flag. The second full-course caution occurred on the final lap, when Miller’s No. 34 made contact with a barrier in Turn 8.

Lewis recovered to finish second in the Pro class, but it ended a three-race win streak for the No. 29. Conor Daly and Brandon Gdovic rallied from starting last to finish third in the Pro class in the No. 46 Precision Performance Motorsports, Lamborghini Palm Beach.

Ockey and Eidson followed a similar path to the Pro-Am victory in the No. 09. Ockey started the race, pitted early and handed the driving chores to Eidson. The first caution benefited the No. 09, with Eidson challenging Mitchell for the overall lead but accepting his fate as second overall and a comfortable first in Pro-Am. William Hubbell and Eric Curran finished second in Pro-Am in the No. 69 Prestige Performance/Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus.

Snow won the Am division and finished third overall in the No. 63. Like the other top finishers, Snow made his mandatory stop prior to the first caution. Steven Aghakhani, winner of both Am races in the previous round at Watkins Glen International, finished second Saturday in the No. 6 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Beverly Hills. Cameron Cassels was third in the No. 33 Prestige Performance/Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus.

Reed, who made his Lamborghini Super Trofeo debut at Watkins Glen in late June in Pro-Am, returned this weekend in LB Cup and teamed with Price in the No. 22 and it turned out to be a winning combination.

Second place in LB Cup went to the No. 88 GMG Racing, Lamborghini Newport Beach driven by Jeffrey Cheng and Thomas Lovelady. In third place was Randy Sellari in the No. 3 Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini North LA.

The second Lamborghini Super Trofeo race off the weekend streams live at 11:45 a.m. EDT Sunday on IMSA.tv or squadracorse.lamborghini.com/live-streaming with IMSA Radio commentary. NBCSN will be broadcasting this round on Wednesday, July 10 at 6 p.m. EDT.

What They Said

Chad Reed – No. 22 Dream Racing, Lamborghini Atlanta

“What a run we have been on. I have gone three and then two and now one. I had a blast today. Thursday was the first time I have ever been here and my first lap was the first time around the track. Justin passed off a beautiful car and the caution really helped us. There was a pretty big gap between first and second and then that went down to nothing. I made passes the first lap and then I was leading.

Then I was leading and was the target but I just had to stay in control. Winning is winning. I have been doing motorcycles since I was three-and-a-half years old but now I am 37 and the transition is coming. At this point I am just trying to learn every lap and trying to win.”

Justin Price – No. 22 Dream Racing, Lamborghini Atlanta

“We have been having a great weekend. It has been amazing to share the car with Chad and take the first-place spot. This racetrack is so fun to drive and to do this today with Chad was amazing. I was pretty clean in my stint and had a good gap. I was able to lay down consistent laps and get the car to Chad in one piece. We had the caution, Chad got in the car and was able to get the lead and bring it home.”

Andrea Amici – No. 1 Prestige Performance/Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus

“We had a good start and fought for position and were in P2 and we pitted early. Getting a win with Prestige Performance and this guy (Sandy Mitchell) give us a lot of positives looking ahead to tomorrow. We will try to push a lot tomorrow and get the same result.”

Sandy Mitchell - No. 1 Prestige Performance/Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus

“Our first win is a great feeling. It was a tough race with a lot of action. We had a good start and moved up to P2 and then we stabilized in P3 and the pace was good so it was a tough race. We came into the pits and that actually helped us because it was a full course yellow and that really helped us. So we gained a lot of time through that and after that I just had to stay out of trouble and stay out of trouble because there was a lot of debris on the track because of some people going off and we were lapping some cars as well. It was a tough race.”

Damon Ockey – No. 09 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Vancouver

“The win was great. In racing you are either lucky or fast and in this race, I was lucky and Jake was fast. It was a perfect combination and ended up with some good points for us in our championship. It was a really good race.”

Jacob Eidson – No. 09 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Vancouver

“It was a crazy and exciting race. Damon did a great job of getting us off to a great start and he has been really consistent. We were able to benefit from that yellow and then it was all chaos from there. I was trying to pass as many cars as fast as I could toward the end. I was super happy with the car and allowed me to be that fast. Hopefully tomorrow we can do one better (after finishing second overall).”

McKay Snow – No. 63 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte

“It is a great feeling to win. We had some rough luck the last race and it is good to be back on top again. The team had a good pit stop and we came out of that with a huge lead and all I had to do was keep the car on the track. I played it safe the last part of the race with a big lead and didn’t take any chances.”
