Maxime Potty: “Already looking towards the end of the season”

Arriving this weekend at the German track of Oschersleben, Maxime Potty was determined to fight for as many points as possible. And although he managed to score a few points in Race 1, the fifth TCR Europe meeting was not really a happy one for the Team WRT member. A mechanical problem encountered during Friday's second free practice placed him in a difficult position...

“With a broken radiator bracket at the beginning of the session and 28 minutes of driving missed, it cannot be said that we were able to approach the qualifying session under the best conditions,” the Belgian driver regrets. "We could not test the car as we would have liked, with new tyres. And the result in Q1 was a time well below our expectations.”

Forced to start twice from 19th place on the starting grid, Maxime never gave up. With the bit between his teeth, the Volkswagen driver managed to limit the damage in Race 1, by coming ninth. "Starting from so far away, I can consider myself lucky to have scored some valuable points," he says.

"On this very twisty track, it was difficult, if not impossible, to overtake. So I was content to drive at a good pace and avoid any incidents, of which there were many in this race. Eleventh at the finish, I was able to take advantage of a penalty imposed on two of my opponents to win two more places. That was enough to make it a reasonable operation.”

By the time he started the second race of the weekend, Maxime had just taken fifth place in the provisional standings of the championship. It was a position he was determined to defend with another fight back. But after a good start to the race, the young man from Hamoir saw his hopes evaporate when Mat’o Homola came into contact with him at the chicane.

"I was surprised by his move and I did not know how to avoid spinning," explains the driver of the Golf GTI TCR #88. "I kept my line however... It is a shame, because I was 15th and I had the opportunity to climb into the points. Starting last, I had nothing more to hope for and I had to settle for 20th place.”

With two more meetings to go, Maxime Potty is ninth in the “Drivers” standings, 24 points off the podium. “I cannot be satisfied with this state of affairs, which has been frustrating. Especially during qualifying, when we missed our targets,” says the 19-year-old.

“But one thing is certain: I intend not to remain in this position! I am already looking towards the end of the season and ready to give it everything to gain the best possible result. After having to carry 60 kilograms of ballast this weekend, I also hope that a revision of the ‘compensation weight’ principle will play a little more in our favour.”

The next round of TCR Europe will take place on 21 and 22 September at the famous Catalunya circuit in Barcelona!
