Zolder - Belgian Champ Car Grand-Prix : Pre-race driver quotes

21.08.2007: Zolder - Belgian Champ Car Grand-Prix : Pre-race driver quotes

Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonalds Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (1st, 250 points) – "Obviously it would be awesome to go back to Europe with the McDonald’s team and get another couple of wins but those tracks are a big unknown for us. I have never been to Zolder or Assen but I didn’t know Brands Hatch (England) or Lausitz (Germany) either and we managed to earn our first and second Champ Car wins there together. I’m very happy to race in Europe again.

Since it is an unknown, there is no big advantage for us so hopefully we can put together a good streak there. The team has prepared extensively and put in a lot of hard work. They have made their best guess on the simulation and baseline setup. Obviously it’s pretty difficult to prepare since we don’t know what we’re going to be facing for real but they have worked really hard and I’m pretty confident that we should have very good cars for both races.

I don’t know what to expect in terms of the crowd but as a European driver and the champion, I hope we attract a lot of fans since they don’t normally get a chance to see us in person. I know the promoters have put a lot of effort into making these races successful and I hope their hard work is rewarded."

Robert Doornbos #14 Minardi Team USACosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (2nd, 213 points) – "For Champ Car, it’s their first time at Zolder, but not for me - I raced there seven years ago, in 2000. It’s just great to drive in front of your home crowd, and for sure it gives you an extra boost that you need.

The last time I won a race in front of my home crowd was at Spa-Francorchamps, in F3000, and the feeling afterwards was just great. I hope I can give them another good show and get a good result this time."

Will Power #5 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (3rd, 197 points) – "We had a disappointing round in Elkhart Lake, but we’re not down and out, in fact we are in the heat of the battle and the championship is not over yet. You know what they say bad luck comes in three’s, so we had our three bad races in a row, so watch out in Europe.

I really look forward to going back to Zolder, it’s a track that I really enjoy and one that suits my style well and brings good luck for me, I earned pole there in World Series By Renault and I’m ready to claim pole again.

This will be a good weekend for the team and for the Champ Car Series as well, I think it’s great that we are going to Europe, the fans are awesome and very supportive of racing. The Aussie Vineyards car should be quick and hopefully you will see us on the podium."

Graham Rahal #2 Medi | Zone Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (5th, 170 points) – "I don’t know much about the track but I know it’s going to be pretty quick. We have some data on the track and there is a lot of work the engineers have to put in before we get there. You have to show up on top of your game and that’s the plan for the Medi | Zone team. I think its going to be great for the European fans because I think something they always miss out on with Formula One is the fan interaction with the drivers.

In Champ Car, we have autograph sessions and the drivers are accessible at the team areas for autographs. I think that will be exciting for the fans that come to Zolder and Assen. They also might be excited about Push to Pass, which gives us 75 more horsepower and exciting pit stops. F 1 has them but there are so many people around the cars that they probably don’t get to see much.

I think ours are more exciting for the fans because you can see the car and the crew guys at work. I have been to a few tracks in Europe like Valencia, Bruno in the Czech Republic, and Silverstone and a couple of other places in England but never to ones in Belgium or Holland so I’m looking forward to getting there.

I’ve been through both Belgium and Holland, driving with my family when we lived in England but never for any length of time so I’m looking forward to the next two races."

Simon Pagenaud #15 Aussie Vineyards Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (8th, 164 points) – "It’s going to be lots of fun to go back home and to race in front of all of my friends and family. We didn’t have the best weekend in Road America and I want to get the Aussie Vineyards car back on track, if I could I would be there already. I want to show the team that we are still one of the strongest combinations and strongest teams in the paddock.

I can’t wait to go back and the fact that it’s in Europe and I’ve raced at Zolder, makes it even more special for me and it will be great for everyone in Champ Car and the fans. It’s a new kind of racing for Europe and it will be great for them to learn the strategy and racing, it’s going to be a great show. I can’t wait to get back and we’ll see what happens."

Bruno Junqueira #19 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (10th, 138 points) – "I am very excited to be going back to Europe to race. I’ve had some great results in a Champ Car while racing in Europe.

Both tracks look to be nice and fast, and will be nice to learn them. Both kind of remind me of Road America, which is the type of track that I love to drive and do well on.

I think the Europeans are very knowledgeable about racing and I am expecting a great crowd at both the Zolder and Assen races. I am sure we can put on a good show for them."

Dan Clarke #4 Minardi Team USA Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (13h, 110 points) – "There's great momentum in my team right now.

As a result of Champ Car staging these two European races, I've been able to go home and spend time with friends and family, which has been a huge pleasure!

If we have another great race here, we can celebrate it with some Belgian waffles!"

Katherine Legge #11 Dale Coyne Racing Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone (15th, 77 points) – "I am looking forward to putting our past race problems behind us and focusing on these next two European races.

From what we have seen of the tracks they look great and are very similar to the ones I grew up racing on. It is very important for us to have conquered the car issues we have had as both Dale Coyne Racing and I have been working so hard to solve them.

I am looking forward to going out and making an impact in Europe. Both races are very close to my home in England which I love because I have not been home in a while and I am really looking forward to seeing my friends and family."
