10 years after the passing of the pilot, entrepreneur, designer

The Fondazione Gino Macaluso per l’Auto Storica is presented in Turin: cars as cult objects and signs of the future

In autumn, a book and an exhibition on the history of rallying, held at MAUTO first and then in the world

The Fondazione Gino Macaluso per l’Auto Storica was presented today. Founded in memory of Gino Macaluso – upon his wife and children’s desire -  the Fondazione aims at promoting cars as cult objects: they are able to combine technological innovation and humanistic culture, traditional craftsmanship and the beauty of avant-garde design, and had a deep influence on the customs and society of the 20th century.

The Foundation pays homage to Turin, the city where Gino Macaluso was born. He was a sportsman and winner of the European Rally Championship in 1972, an architect and designer, an entrepreneur awarded with the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro. Although he spent most of his professional career and life in Switzerland and abroad, Macaluso felt a strong attachment to the city of cars and experimental innovation.

The Foundation is a sign of the legacy that Gino Macaluso gives back to the city of Turin, with a commitment to support young people and new generations with a passion for cars, motorsports, innovation, and car design.

“Cars, in all their forms, were one of Gino Macaluso’s great passions: the Foundation’s mission is to renew his love for cars, their speed and beauty. Our hope is that the Fondazione Gino Macaluso can contribute to expanding the Italian Motor Valley, starting from Turin, to define a new cultural geography of the automotive landscape.

The collection will take Turin to the world, to major museums and institutions that will revive the culture of Italian car-making”, said Monica Mailander Macaluso, President of the Fondazione Gino Macaluso per l’Auto Storica. She adds: “On the tenth anniversary of his passing, Stefano, Massimo, Anna, Margherita and I want to make Gino’s dream come true and pay tribute to his memory”.

The renowned collection of the Fondazione Gino Macaluso tells the history of rallying, the epic saga of legendary races, great pilots, and of the most successful cars. The collection, created by Gino Macaluso himself, is one of the most important in the world.

Its cars, the prestige and originality of the models it includes, make it truly unique: classic Gran Turismo, rally and race track cars that tell the history of car design and motorsport between the 1960’s and the 1990’s, and have taken part in the most prestigious world events on classic cars, thus becoming a landmark for researchers, collectors and enthusiasts.

“The Foundation is proof of the rich Italian car heritage, unparalleled in terms of design, competitiveness, industrial capacity and history. The legacy of Gino Macaluso, thanks also to the international nature of his life, will help promote it and foster the image of Italy and Italian sports in the world, renewing the passion for cars among younger generations”, said Angelo Sticchi Damiani, President of ACI- Automobile Club d’Italia and member of the Advisory Board of the Fondazione Gino Macaluso per l’Auto Storica.

Through the collection, the Foundation intends to follow and fulfil the dream and passion of Gino Macaluso, who thought of cars as “the most intense expression of creativity of the 20th century”. Taking inspiration from Gino Macaluso’s experience as a designer and his love for art objects, the Foundation will develop a cultural programme that connects car design with modern and contemporary art.

The health emergency required a reorganization of all planned activities. After cancelling all events abroad and in Italy in spring-summer 2020, the Fondazione Gino Macaluso will participate in some of the most important car events starting from this autumn: the Milano Monza Open Air Show, scheduled between the Monza race track and the city of Monza from 29 October to 1 November, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2021.

In December 2020, the cars of the Fondazione Gino Macaluso will take centre stage at “The Golden Age of Rally - Le grandi sfide”, a great exhibition on the history of World Rally Championships that will open in Turin at MAUTO- Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile (3 December 2020 – 9 May 2021).

The exhibition will then go on a road show between Europe, the United States and Japan. The first stops are planned at the Louwman Museum in The Hague and at Autoworld in Brussels. Still in autumn, on the tenth anniversary of Gino Macaluso’s passing, the book “Mac-la Fondazione Gino Macaluso per l’Auto Storica” will be published by Rizzoli: a work dedicated to the man, pilot and entrepreneur, with many remembrances that are a testament to his life.

The Foundation officially opened its renovated space near Turin: a Wunderkammer, a cabinet of curiosities dedicated to the history of cars, with glorious examples from motorsports, a workshop for the restoration of classic cars, a car archive and library.

The opening ceremony was celebrated today with an online dialogue between Monica Mailander Macaluso, President of the Foundation, Stefano, Massimo, Anna and Margherita Macaluso, Gino Macaluso’s children, connected from the Foundation’s renovated headquarters, and distinguished guests from the world of cars: Lord Charles Richmond, Duke of Richmond and Gordon e promoter of the most important classic car events in the world; Angelo Sticchi Damiani, President of ACI-Automobile Club d’Italia and member of the Advisory Board of the Foundation; Paolo Cantarella, President of the Classic Car Commission of ACI and FIA;  Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Lamborghini; and World Rally champion Miki Biasion.
