DAKAR RALLY
Stage 7 from Ha'il to Sakaka
Sunday, January 10th 2021

at start :Cars     56

13:03 Peterhansel holds on

279 km into the special, Stéphane Peterhansel is still on top of things with 3′42″ to spare over Saudi Yazeed Al-Rajhi and, most importantly, five minutes over Nasser Al-Attiyah and six over Carlos Sainz, his two closest rivals in the general standings! This could be a crucial victory for the Frenchman, not least because it comes in a marathon stage.

12:40 Despres and Horn holding their own

Cyril Despres and the trailblazer Mike Horn are putting in a great performance today, cruising through km 215 in sixth place. The duo is using the Dakar to gather data for the development of a hydrogen-powered vehicle. Their current deficit to Stéphane Peterhansel is 11 minutes.

12:31 Al-Rajhi hits back at km 242

Stéphane Peterhansel still leads the car race after going through km 242 with a 3′49″ margin over Yazeed Al-Rajhi. Carlos Sainz appears to have suffered a puncture after a blistering start and is now 6′39″ behind his teammate. Nasser Al-Attiyah, who is also reported to have had a flat tyre, is still five minutes behind Peterhansel.

11:45 Peter kicks it up a notch

Stéphane Peterhansel is zeroing in on his first stage win of this year's Dakar. 178 km into the special, the Frenchman has expanded his lead over teammate Carlos Sainz, Yazeed Al-Rajhi and Nasser Al-Attiyah to more than four minutes.

11:19 Peterhansel sets the pace

Stéphane Peterhansel has upped the pace and is now 1′24″ clear of Nasser Al-Attiyah at km 148. Carlos Sainz and his Mini are now third, over three minutes back and just 10″ ahead of Yazeed Al-Rajhi, the man at the wheel of the second Toyota in the general standings. We have still got a long way to go!

10:50 Roma shines in his BRX

Nani Roma and his new French co-driver, Alexandre Winocq, are shining at the wheel of their new Bahrain Raid Xtreme (BRX) prototype, another one of which has been left in the care of Sébastien Loeb. The two-time Dakar champion is now fifth overall, 1 h 36 behind two Minis and two Toyotas. The Catalan is satisfied with his performance in the opening week, stressing the continuous progression of his BRX. An auspicious start!

10:44 Peterhansel strikes back

After Sainz went through the first WP in first place, Stéphane Peterhansel has struck back by beating his Spanish rival, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Yazeed Al-Rajhi at km 63. Less than a minute separates the four crews, while Sébastien Loeb and Martin Prokop have yet to go through km 63 after conceding just over two minutes at the first time check.

10:30 Serradori and Lurquin still up and running

After suffering yet another mechanical on Friday, Mathieu Serradori and Fabian Lurquin used the rest day to patch up their CR6 and prepare it for the start of the seventh special. The first week has been a rollercoaster for the two men, who are nonetheless still up and running!

10:13 Baragwanath grinds to a halt

Brian Baragwanath had to stop for a few minutes near km 33. The South African is back on the move, but he has lost valuable time in the process.

10:05 Loeb hoping to win the Dakar 'at some point'

Sébastien Loeb and his co-driver, Daniel Elena, reached the bivouac in Ha'il during the night from Friday to Saturday. The BRX's crew took a very long time to fix a broken wishbone. They are now over 11 h 42 back in the general standings, but Loeb and Elena vowed on social media to come back and win the Dakar!

10:03 Sainz on top of things

Carlos Sainz was just 17 seconds faster than Nasser Al-Attiyah at the first checkpoint. The Spaniard does not seem to be struggling with opening the way so far. Stéphane Peterhansel is losing 1′17″ to the leader and, therefore, a minute to Al-Attiyah, his main rival for the overall.

09:40 Baragwanath flies the flag for Century

Brian Baragwanath and his co-driver Taye Perry are sixth overall, 1 h 50 behind Stéphane Peterhansel. After finishing second in stage 5, right behind fellow South African Giniel De Villiers, Baragwanath did a few barrell rolls on Friday, which did not stop him from finishing just 19'16' down on Carlos Sainz.

 09:30 Sainz leads the charge

Carlos Sainz took his second stage win on Friday after a disastrous performance in the previous special. The defending champion even went as far as to describe the last special as '[his] best day of the week'. The Mini driver lies third in the general standings, 40 minutes behind his teammate, but with plenty of stony sections on the menu today, the time has come for Sainz to take the bull by the horns.

07:20 Peterhansel puts on a display of strategic acumen

A stage win continues to elude Stéphane Peterhansel this year, but the Frenchman has exhibited a remarkable level of consistency with five podium finishes in six specials, good enough for him to lead the general standings with a six-minute margin over Nasser Al-Attiyah. Carlos Sainz, third at 40 minutes behind his teammate, will be leading the charge in stage 6. Can he claw back some time today?
