12:43 Peterhansel opens the way and a gap

Stéphane Peterhansel is now opening the way for his rivals, but it is not stopping the Frenchman from widening the gap over Nasser Al-Attiyah who now trails him by more than three minutes.

12:18 Al-Attiyah and Sainz lose time

Up with the pace and in and around the lead over the first 127 kilometres, Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah have lost time at the next time check point (after 215 km). Stéphane Peterhansel now has a lead of 2’48’’ over Al-Attiyah and almost five minutes over Sainz. “Mister Dakar” is taking further strides towards victory!

12:05 A burst of effort from Sainz

Carlos Sainz still leads after 127 km, but the Spaniard now has a lead of a little less than a minute over Nasser Al-Attiyah. Stéphane Peterhansel is just behind the Toyota of his Qatari rival. Khalid Sheikh Al-Qassimi is fourth, trailing Sainz by more than 3’30’’.

    11:21 Sainz takes the lead

After 85 km, Carlos Sainz has taken the lead on today’s special with a lead of almost 1’30’’ over Nasser Al-Attiyah. The Toyota driver in turn possesses a lead of approximately 45’’ over Stéphane Peterhansel, as the battle rages between the top three in the general standings.

    10:48 Peterhansel keeps the lead

Stéphane Peterhansel leads the stage at the first time check point, just six seconds in front of Carlos Sainz and 39’’ ahead of Khalid Sheikh Al-Qassimi. Brian Baragwanath is in fourth position, just in front of Nasser Al-Attiyah. The winner of the tenth special, Yazeed Al Rajhi has lost over a minute.

A watchful eye will have to be kept on the other drivers who have not yet started, such as Yasir Seaidan, who suffered a mechanical problem yesterday after leading at the beginning of the stage.

10:25 Despres and Horn in the hunt for the top ten

Cyril Despres and Mike Horn completed yesterday’s special in 20th place, hindered by the dust and delayed by a puncture which caused them to lose ground.

While Despres is teaching Horn about the secrets of the rally-raid discipline, his co-pilot is introducing the Frenchman to hunting and the Peugeot crew’s goal is to hunt for a place in the top 10.

In the general standings, they currently occupy 12th position, less than 12’ behind Chrisitian Lavieille, so their objective is still within their reach!

10:11 Peterhansel gains the upper hand over Al-Attiyah

Stéphane Peterhansel and Nasser Al-Attiyah are among the first drivers to reach WP1 and the Frenchman has gained approximately forty seconds over his Qatari rival, almost as much as the gap that separated the two men yesterday on completion of the tenth special.

    10:10 Serradori in the dust

Mathieu Serradori and his co-pilot Fabian Lurquin made a stunning comeback on yesterday’s special! The Franco-Belgian duo was the 27th to start and rocketed into third place at the first time check point, thirty seconds behind the leader.

However, after having to drive in the dust kicked up by the competitors, the crew suffered a puncture that dropped them back behind the stage leaders. Nonetheless, they still managed to finish the stage in eighth place a little more than nine minutes behind the leaders. For the last two stages, their aim is clear – to try and win one!

09:48 Sainz drives blind

Carlos Sainz, whose bid for the title seems compromised, also experienced several difficulties on stage ten. In addition to the complicated navigation, “El Matador” lost time in the first kilometres that he had to regain on the second half of the special, with dust added into the equation making it difficult to see.

Sainz is third in the general standings, more than one hour behind his team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel.

    09:35 Al-Rajhi at the start

Yazeed Al-Rajhi is the first driver to start the 11th special, but all eyes will be on the duel between Nasser Al-Attiyah and Stéphane Peterhansel. Soft dunes and several navigational pitfalls are on the day’s menu and anything could happen. A 17 minute gap in the general standings is impressive, but could disappear quickly

07:30 Another title almost within reach for Peterhansel

Stéphane Peterhansel could well win the Dakar tomorrow, 30 years after his first victory. But before he pops the champagne, he will have to clear stage 11, the longest in the 43rd edition.

With almost 100 km of dunes on the menu, there is a potential error lurking around each corner, and his 17-minute lead over Nasser Al-Attiyah could melt away like snow in the sun. The Mini driver will have to be on high alert —nothing too hard for 'Monsieur Dakar', who has finished on the podium in all but two stages this year.

07:00 Yanbu beckons at the end of a decisive stage

At 511 kilometres, the penultimate stage is also the longest in the 43rd Dakar, featuring almost 100 kilometres of dunes. The titles are still up for grabs in some categories, so the favourites will have to measure each jump carefully to try and gain time and, even more importantly, avoid losing any. The stage to Yanbu could well hold the key to the Dakar.

18:40 Stage 11 shortened, timetable stays the same

The recent weather in the final stretch of stage 11 as originally designed has forced the organisers to shorten the course by about 50 kilometres to avoid the area. However, dunes remain the backbone of this decisive stage, which is going to put the competitors and their vehicles through the wringer!
