DAKAR RALLY 2021
stage 12 and final
Yanbu to Jeddah
Liaison  247 km - Special 200 km
Friday, January 15th 2021

At the final stage start:52  cars

12:30 One more for the road for Sainz

Yazeed Al-Rajhi has broken his engine several kilometres from the finishing line! The Saudi driver was battling for victory with Carlos Sainz but is now having to await his assistance team, enabling his rival from Madrid to soar away to his third stage success of the year. Sainz, who ran into misfortune several times, finishes the rally on the third step of the final podium, more than one hour behind his team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel.

11:47 Peterhansel picks up his 14th triumph on the Dakar

Stéphane Peterhansel has done it! Assisted by his new co-pilot Édouard Boulanger, on the last special the Frenchman has withstood the attacks from the duo of Nasser Al-Attiyah and Matthieu Baumel to obtain his eighth overall triumph on the Dakar in the car category and his 14th title overall on the most prestigious of rally-raids. What’s more, “Mister Dakar” has triumphed 30 years after his first crown on a bike in 1991.

11:33 Al-Rajhi is hot on the heels of Sainz

Carlos Sainz still leads the dance 50 km from the finish, but Yazeed Al-Rajhi is determined to make it difficult from him and trails the Spaniard by only 15’’, making for a fierce final duel in the desert!

11:13 A reaction from Al-Attiyah…

…but it is probably too little, too late from the Toyota driver. With only 50 km left until the finishing line, Nasser Al-Attiyah has regained forty seconds on his rival Stéphane Peterhansel. Barring a miracle, Peterhansel seems to be ensured of his 14th victory on the Dakar.

 11:03 Al-Rajhi joins the party

Yazeed Al-Rajhi has moved into third place between the two rivals for the title, Stéphane Peterhansel and Nasser Al-Attiyah, 1’30’’ behind stage leader Carlos Sainz. Cyril Despres remains in fifth place, almost 3’30’’ behind the Spaniard.

 10:37 Peterhansel increases the gap

At the first time check point, Carlos Sainz occupies first place, 44’’ ahed of his team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel. Nasser Al-Attiyah, who was opening the way, trails the Spaniard by a little more than two minutes, thus conceding more than a minute to his French rival 100 km from the finishing line.

09:46 Despres and Horn in the top 5

They were seeking a top 10 finish, but in fact they managed to grab the fifth best time on the eleventh special, only eight minutes behind the winner Nasser Al-Attiyah. Even if they had to drive in the dust of the competitors in front of them for a long time, the “grandpas”, as they are nicknamed on the bivouac, have climbed into tenth place in the general standings while continuing to collect data for the future development of a hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle.

09:38 Too many punctures for Al-Attiyah

Nasser Al-Attiyah is opening the way on the last special following his sixth stage victory yesterday. Despite this performance, the Qatari driver still trails Stéphane Peterhansel by just over a quarter of an hour. Nasser Al-Attiyah pointed out yesterday evening that his 16 punctures were “far too many”. The Toyota crew, who as a result have lost valuable time over the last 11 stages, will, despite everything, be trying their luck today with the hope of big time gains.

09:21 Al-Attiyah gets to grips with the special

6 out of 11 is the score for Nasser Al-Attiyah and Matthieu Baumel as they set off for the last special on stage 12 of the rally. The Toyota crew are leading out the cars in front of Stéphane Peterhansel, the Qatari’s main rival, for a duel that promises to be thrilling!

07:20 Peterhansel closes in on number 14

Despite a big fright after heavily hitting a rock with his Mini towards the end of the special yesterday, Stéphane Peterhansel only conceded a little more than two minutes to Nasser Al-Attiyah. The Frenchman still possesses a lead of more than a quarter of an hour. A 14th title on the Dakar is starting to emerge over the horizon for “Peter”, 30 years after his very first!

07:00 The final push towards Jeddah

447 km separate the competitors still in the rally from the overall finish, including a 200-km long special. On paper, it is short, but with dunes again on the menu, mistakes are possible, as are incidents when getting stuck can cost precious time. While the title is still up for grabs for some, others will just be focused on completing this adventure on the shores of the Red Sea with the satisfaction of having finished!
