Eleven-Car Lamborghini Entry for New GT Super Sprint Challenge China

07.05.2021: • Squadra Corse-supported Climax Racing and Phantom Pro Racing join Grid Motorsport in GT3 class for brand new all-Am GT sprint series • Asian debut for Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo in GT2 specification in points-scoring ST Class • Five-roun

•    Squadra Corse-supported Climax Racing and Phantom Pro Racing join Grid Motorsport in GT3 class for brand new all-Am GT sprint series

•    Asian debut for Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo in GT2 specification in points-scoring ST Class

•    Five-round, 10-race series gets underway at Shanghai International Circuit

Lamborghini will be out in force this weekend as China’s newest championship, the GT Super Sprint Challenge (GTSSC), gets underway at the Shanghai International Circuit for the first of the five double-header rounds of its inaugural season.

Leading the charge are seven Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO entries from Squadra Corse-supported Chinese team Phantom Pro Racing, along with Climax Racing and a single entry from Grid Motorsport. At the same time, the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo running in GT2 specification will break cover in Asia for the first time, with four entries in the series’ Super Trofeo class; three from TRT and one from 300+ Motorsport.

Hot on the heels of Phantom Pro Racing’s newly-minted partnership with Lamborghini Squadra Corse for the 2021 season, lining up for their first outing in the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo is one of the team’s founders, Chris Chia.

Having built the foundations of his motorsport career in single seaters, Chia switched to GT competition, winning the 2019 China GT Championship GT4 title and becoming an Am class race winner in the Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia’s Shanghai round the same year. Joining Chia in the Hong Kong, China-based team’s second Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO is another accomplished Am driver, Yao Liangbo.

Shanghai-based Climax Racing was founded in 2019 by Zhou Bihuang, China GT Championship GTC title-winner that year in a Lamborghini Super Trofeo Evo. Having stepped up to the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo for the team’s tilt at the 2020 China Endurance Championship, this weekend Climax Racing fields four of the formidable racing thoroughbreds for promising Chinese Am drivers Tang Ruobin, Hu Yuqi, 2017 China GT Championship GT3 winner Xu Jia, and Zhou Liyuan.

Gearing up for a third year of campaigning their Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo, Grid Motorsport rounds out the GT3 entries with Bei Siling, a top 10 finisher in a Lamborghini in last year’s Macau Grand Prix GT Cup.

Launched at the end of 2018, since its inception the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO has laid claim to victory in some of the world’s most prestigious GT races, including three back-to-back class victories at the 24 hours of Daytona and two in the 12 hours of Sebring.

The Huracán GT3 Evo is the only GTD car to win Daytona and Sebring in the same year, achieving the feat in both 2018 and 2019. With improved aerodynamics, an updated V10 engine and power steering, the enhanced handling and stability created by the completely re-designed suspension also makes it the ideal race car for the all-Am GTSSC.

As the new GT Super Sprint Challenge makes its entry into the Chinese motorsport scene this weekend, all eyes will be on the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo as it breaks cover in Asia for the first time running in GT2 specification.

The modified version of the 620hp Huracán Super Trofeo Evo single-make race car will have its own points-scoring championship within GTSCC, with the top scorers earning parts credits for the 2022 season. All entrants receive discounts on onsite parts inventory as well as hospitality at each race weekend, a benefit extended to all Lamborghini entrants throughout the season.

TRT has three entries in the class for the Shanghai season-opener for Adolf Lee, Kang Zhilong and Ray Lou. 300+ Motorsport, meanwhile, enters Dino Sun.

The GTSSC is open to GT2, GT3, GT4 and GTC cars, and is designed for Am drivers looking to compete in a professionally-managed GT championship based on the principles of organizational excellence and fair play. The 10-race, five-round 2021 calendar encompasses three circuits across China; the FIA Grade I Shanghai International Circuit, which plays host to both the opening and closing rounds, the 3.77km Zhuzhou International Circuit in Hunan Province, and the 4km Ningbo International Speedpark.

Each race weekend comprises two, 27-minute sprint races, with a single qualifying session setting the grid for race one, and the results of the opening race dictating the starting order for race two.

GTSCC Super Trofeo Class-entered drivers are eligible to earn points towards both the overall title as well as the class.

GT Super Sprint Challenge 2021 Provisional Calendar

May 8-9: Shanghai International Circuit
June 12-13: Zhuzhou International Circuit

In 2018 Squadra Corse inaugurated its first One-Off, the SC18 Alston, followed by open-top SC20 in 2020. In the same year Squadra Corse unveiled Essenza SCV12 the track-only hypercar in a limited edition of 40 units, fitted with the most powerful V12 naturally aspirated engine ever developed by Lamborghini: over 830 hp.
