ORLEN 77TH RALLY POLAND, JUNE 18-20
FIA ERC Junior Championship 2021, Round 1 of 6
FIA ERC3 Junior Championship 2021, Round 1 of 6

Jon Armstrong (GBR) ERC Junior
Co-driver: Phil Hall (GBR) Team: M-Sport Poland Car: Ford Fiesta Rally3 Result: 1st

“It’s been a really good week, we had a nice test at the beginning to get used to the Fiesta Rally3, which was easy to get used to straight away. We were pretty much on Ken’s [Torn] pace all weekend, it’s a shame he had his issue as it would have been good to have a battle. Ken’s a very good driver, there’s no doubt about that and he’s somebody I want to be up against to be able to develop on as a driver.

You never know where you’re going to be coming into events like this with limited miles in the car, it’s always a bit of an unknown. I think that just goes to show how easy it is to drive the Fiesta Rally3, it’s really fun to drive and easy to push on the limit.”

Ken Torn (EST) ERC Junior
Co-driver: Kauri Pannas (EST) Team: M-Sport Poland Car: Ford Fiesta Rally3 Result: 2nd

“We made it to the finish which is the most important thing. We made some progress and we knew where we could push more. We were happy with the pace and a bit surprised with how close we could compete with the Rally2 cars.”

Giovanni Benvenuto Baruffa (ITA) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Simone Brachi (ITA) Team: Baldon Rally Team Car: Peugeot 208 Rally4 Result: DNF

“I can say that Rally Poland did not really start for us. After breaking the ice in the short Mikołajki Arena special stage on Friday evening, we set out on Saturday morning with the aim of measuring the new special stages without looking too much at the standings in this completely new experience for us. After a few kilometres, however, I began to experience a drop in tension and a great difficulty in maintaining concentration. I felt tired and fatigued, very hot and out of breath.

I started to worry, anyway I wanted to try to do the second special stage of the morning as well to see if the situation improved, but it got worse and worse. At that point, at the start of the next test, the longest of the day, together with my co-pilot and the guys from the team, I decided it would be more safe to stop in order not to risk something worse. I'm sorry for us, for the team, for everyone who has worked in these weeks but it was better to stop.”

Alejandro Cachón (ESP) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Alejandro López (ESP) Team: Rallye Team Spain Car: Peugeot 208 Rally4 Result: DNF

“I feel really disappointed. To be out of the rally in the third stage was not what we had expected for our first appearance in ERC with Rallye Team Spain. I faced a fast section a bit out of the line and I lost the car in fifth gear. We had a heavy crash, but, fortunately, my co-driver and me are okay. We’ll learn from this to be back stronger in Latvia.”

Jean-Baptiste Franceschi (FRA) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Arnaud Dunand (FRA) Team: Toksport WRT Car: Renault Clio Rally4 Result: DNF

Set four top-three stage times on his debut in the all-new Clio Rally4 but was delayed on leg and forced to retire prior to the start of day two’s closing loop with a broken wheel.

Kaspar Kasari (EST) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Rainis Raidma (EST) Team: OT Racing Car: Ford Fiesta Rally4 Result: 4th

“We are happy, we are at the finish and in one piece, that’s the main goal and we learned a lot. We got one stage win as well as a top-two time which is good. It’s our second rally together [with my co-driver Rainis Raidma] and my first big event outside of Estonia that’s why experience is important for me.”

Martin László (HUN) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Dávid Berendi (HUN) Team: M-Sport Racing Kft Car: Peugeot 208 Rally4 Result: DNF

Making his ERC3 Junior debut and competing on ORLEN 77th Rally Poland for the first time, László impressed by holding fourth position with two stages remaining. Unfortunately a broken steering resulted in his retirement on SS13.

Nick Loof (DEU) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Hugo Magalhães (PRT) Team: Orsák Rallysport Car: Ford Fiesta Rally4 Result: 3rd

“I am really happy. It was a great rally overall, maybe I made two or three mistakes but overall I am really happy. It was the second proper gravel rally for me so we can really happy.

The most challenging things were the ruts for us because the road was really messy after all of the cars. [It was] something I didn’t know how to handle before because I had never had the chance to try it, I think we got along quite well and the improvement was there.”

Norbert Maior (ROU) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Francesca Maior (ROU) Team: ToppCars Rally Team Car: Peugeot 208 Rally4 Result: 2nd

“My first podium in ERC3 Junior, it’s amazing, I am really happy. It was a really complicated weekend, but we enjoyed it and we are happy to be at the finish of the rally. We are really looking forward to the next event we can do because I hope it’s not a single event here.”

Amaury Molle (BEL) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Florian Barral (FRA) Team: TM Competition Car: Ford Fiesta Rally4 Result: 6th

“We were really happy to be back behind the wheel after such a long stop. It was a new rally for me and it was a real challenge to experience with a lot of new factors. After our good times in Free Practice and qualifying, we were quite happy to be in contact with the leader of the race but, unfortunately, our efforts were not representative during the race. I had to modify and adapt my driving style to the gravel, which is ultimately very different when you're on asphalt.

Our race for experience came to an abrupt halt during SS5 following the failure and breakage of an oil pressure sensor. We were able to be at the start during the next day with a view to gaining as much experience as possible on gravel and increasing our confidence in the car. It was done and with as a bonus: we left with big important points for the championship.”

Nikolai Landa (AUT) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Günter Landa (AUT) Team: Drift Company Rally Team Car: Ford Fiesta Rally4 Result: DNF

“We were really happy with our pace [on the Qualifying Stage] and showed a little bit our potential. I noticed the pacenotes were completely off on Saturday morning, it was way too much information for stages like that. We had no trust and no confidence but we made some progress in the afternoon and the day ended pretty okay. Our tactic for Sunday was to learn, learn and learn and get as much kilometres as possible.

Then, unfortunately, on stage 10 I noticed that something under the bonnet was smoking so we stopped the car. We continued after talking to our mechanic but then we noticed the engine bay was burning and there were flames coming out of it. We had to stop again and extinguish the fire and sadly had to retire.”

Ola Jr Nore (NOR) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Jørgen Eriksen (NOR) Team: Toksport WRT Car: Renault Clio Rally5 Result: DNF

“I was happy to be able to fight for the top spot. The rally had some really fast stages, with changing surfaces. In the end the gearbox stopped working properly and we had to retire. But we learned a lot about the new car and gained experience.”

Sami Pajari (FIN) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Enni Mälkönen (FIN) Team: Porvoon Autopalvelu Car: Ford Fiesta Rally4 Result: 1st

“It feels great to be honest, first time competing in the ERC and I am winning, it couldn’t have been better. There has been close competition, which I have been very impressed with, so it was not an easy job. It’s nice to see the guys I’m competing against for the first time as good competition. I need to say biggest thanks to M-Sport Poland, the car was amazing, this was a win together with the team.”

Daniel Polášek (CZE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Kateřina Janovská (CZE) Team: Yacco ACCR Team Car: Ford Fiesta Rally4 Result: 5th

“Rally Poland was awesome, I really enjoyed it. The roads today were quite destroyed, we made some damage on our Fiesta a little bit so we will see how bad it is. We tried to push and, like I said, it was awesome.”
