PURE ETCR: MotorLand Aragón set to crown another King of the weekend

08.07.2021: - MotorLand Aragón next in PURE ETCR’s debut season - Mikel Azcona & CUPRA lead standings ahead of home event - Sporting format tweaked to increase overtaking opportunities

- MotorLand Aragón next in PURE ETCR’s debut season

- Mikel Azcona & CUPRA lead standings ahead of home event

- Sporting format tweaked to increase overtaking opportunities

PURE ETCR heads to Spain for the second event of its inaugural season - Race
- at MotorLand Aragón this weekend with series leader Mikel Azcona set to receive a hero’s welcome in his home country.

The 25-year-old was victorious at the world’s first all-electric, multi-brand touring car event at Vallelunga in June to launch himself to the head of Drivers’ points table and put CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport on top of the Manufacturers’ points.

He won’t have it his own way though. Team-mate Mattias Ekström pushed him hardest at Vallelunga while Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay is second in the standings - only five points behind - and the Frenchman’s team-mate Augusto Farfus was also a Battle winner.

Romeo Ferraris - M1RA achieved three Battle wins of their own in Italy with the new Giulia ETCR by Romeo Ferraris.

Luca Filippi, Stefano Coletti and Oli Webb all chalked up victories with Filippi best-placed in the points table in fifth spot.

As Vallelunga proved, any one of the 12 superstar drivers has an excellent chance of being crowned King of the Weekend, with The Draw - which decides the starting positions for Round 1 - again likely to play a key role in the outcome.

Race SP will be extra-special event as spectators will be allowed to attend the event - which is a double-header weekend with the similarly Eurosport Events-promoted WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup.

TRACK GUIDE - MotorLand Aragón

Located close to Alcaniz - which staged its own Grand Prix on a demanding street circuit from 1965-2003 - MotorLand Aragón has served the region’s motorsport needs since it opened in 2009. A 2.6km layout - one of 17 different configurations possible - will be used for PURE ETCR’s visit this weekend, presenting drivers with a 13-corner layout dominated by left-handers and fearsome ‘banana’ kerbs.

The Starting Gate will be located not at the finish line, but halfway around the lap, giving PURE ETCR’s stars a flat-out blast down the back straight before joining up with the circuit at Turn Seven. Unlike at Vallelunga, this single layout will be used for the entire weekend.

There is no qualifying in PURE ETCR. After free practice, a random draw - which fans can watch live on the series’ Facebook page and YouTube channel - will determine the rest of the weekend.

The Draw

Twelve drivers are randomly split into two Pools - A and B - with six drivers in each. Drivers in Pool A and Pool B will be kept separate from each other for the rest of the event. Each car will be shared between two drivers, meaning one of each pair will be placed in Pool A and the other in Pool B.

Each Pool is then randomly split into two groups of three cars each, with grid positions also determined at this stage. Once the groups are drawn, one driver per pool will be randomly selected to make the ‘Drivers’ Choice’, giving them the option to swap their grid position with a rival.

One team representative will then be randomly selected to win the ‘Golden Ticket’. This will give them the option to swap either one of their drivers’ grid positions or switch their designated pool with their co-driver.

In Spain The Draw takes place at 21h30 on Thursday night.

Round 1 (Friday)

Two Battles per pool are held with three cars taking part in each. Battles last no more than 15 minutes. 300kW constant power is available to each driver, plus a ‘Power-up’ boost of between 20 and 60 seconds (in Spain it will be 40 seconds), taking their car to the maximum 500kW. Power-up can be used as an overtaking aid and is not available to the race leader.

Round 2 (Saturday)

Three Battles are held per pool, each comprising two cars. Round 1 winners face each other, second faces second and third faces third for a maximum of 12 minutes. In a change to the format used at Vallelunga, 300kW constant power is available plus 200kW ‘Power-up’.

Round 3 (Saturday)

A solo time trial with the maximum 500kW available for the duration. This will last one or two laps (one in Spain), dependent on circuit length, with the fastest driver in each Pool qualifying on pole position for their DHL SuperFinal.

DHL SuperFinals (Sunday)

One per pool, with six cars per battle and every driver still in with a chance of becoming King or Queen of the Weekend. SuperFinals are up to 20 minutes duration and feature all cars on 300kW constant power with Power-up taking them to 500kW.

Points are awarded as follows:

Round 1: 15-10-4 for the first three finishers

Round 2: 12-6 for the first two finishers

Round 3: No points awarded

Round 4: 50-42-35-27-20-15 for the first six finishers

The driver with the highest score from the event is the King or Queen of the Weekend and also wins the TAG Heuer Most Valuable Driver Award. Points won on each day count towards each driver’s end-of-season championship score, so consistency is key.

TYRE TALK: Sebastian Trinks, Goodyear PURE ETCR Series Leader

“We’re expecting a very hot weekend at MotorLand Aragon with track temperatures of up to 50 degrees expected. Unlike Vallelunga, there aren’t really any long, high-speed turns, on the 2.6km layout we’re using, but because the track is mainly left-handers, the right-rear tyre will be loaded a lot of the time. There are also some big ‘banana kerbs’, which can damage wheel rims if hit heavily.

As we’re now at the second event, every driver has three sets of new tyres available - one less than in Vallelunga. They are allowed to carry over one set from Vallelunga though, so anybody who deliberately didn’t use all their tyres in Italy and still has an unused set in reserve is likely to have an advantage.”
