The seventh round of the 2021 MXGP World Championship takes place this weekend in Kegums, Latvia, finishing off a run of four races in four weekends. The Kegums track is located about 45 minutes south-east of Riga and is a regular feature of the calendar, having also hosted the first ever triple-header events in 2020.


For Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, the track holds good memories, having won the overall there in 2016 and 2019 on his way to MXGP titles. He also won motos in 2020, but wasn’t able to quite land himself on the top step of the podium in any of the three rounds.


This year, there is only one event and afterwards there are three weekends’ off so everyone is looking to head into that break with some momentum, none more so than Gajser who hasn’t quite been at his championship-winning best the last couple of races.



Still, the Slovenian rider knows what he has to do and is coming into the weekend with a fresh mindset that will hopefully see him add to the two overall victories has already in 2021 and stretch out his points-lead once again in the battle for title.


Like every round this year, all of the MXGP timetable will take place on Sunday, with a 20-minute free practice going straight into 25 minutes of timed practice which gives the gate picks for the two motos at 13:15 and 16:10 on Sunday 8th August.

Latvia is always a tricky round, but I’ve had some really good races in the past there so I’m hoping to replicate those and get back to winning ways. I’ve been putting too much pressure on myself these past few rounds so now I just want to get back to having fun on the bike again and enjoying my riding and if I can do that, the results will come.

This will be the last round before we have a bit of a break in the season so it is important to end this round on a high note. Tim has consistently shown speed this season but the results haven’t quite been so consistent, so hopefully he can put that right in Kegums.



 The track is a bit sandy, but much faster than somewhere like Lommel or Oss so it presents different challenges but having won motos here in the past, we have good knowledge for the setup and hope to get everything right on Sunday.
