DAKAR RALLY 2022
Saudi Arabia
1-14 January
Stage 8  Al Dawadimi > Wadi Ad Dawasir
Monday, January 10th 2022

Ekström pips Peterhansel at the post

Stéphane Peterhansel had achieved the best time at the finishing line of the day’s special, before being dethroned by his team-mate Mattias Ekström. Unless there is a major surprise, the Swede should win his very first stage on the Dakar.

Sébastien Loeb should finish third, just three seconds in front of Carlos Sainz. In any case, he has prevented Audi from accomplishing a 1-2-3 and has regained 7' minutes in the general standings over Nasser Al-Attiyah, who finished more than 10 minutes behind Ekström.

 13:20 Car: Sainz overtakes Loeb

After 280 km, Carlos Sainz has moved in front of Sébastian Loeb by just 9 seconds. Stéphane Peterhansel still leads, with an advantage of 1’46’’ over his Audi team-mate. The third Audi representative, Mattias Ekström, lies in wait just 2’40’’ behind. “Orly” is almost 6 minutes behind the four leaders.

12:29 Car: Al-Attiyah loses 8 minutes

After 170 km, Nasser Al-Attiyah trails his rival Sébastien Loeb by 8’28’’. The Qatari is third in a convoy of Toyotas lead by Giniel De Villiers ahead of Shameer Variawa. Yazeed Al Rajhi lies 5 seconds behind Al-Attiyah à 5’’ whilst Bernhard Ten Brinke is bringing up the rear for the Japanese constructor a little more than 10’ in front of Martin Prokop in his Ford.

12:03 Car: Loeb moves into the lead

After 170 km, Sébastien Loeb has moved in front of Stéphane Peterhansel. However, it would seem that the man from Alsace has lost one of his spare wheels on the special. He will have to be extremely careful in order to reach the finishing line.

11:35 Car: Peterhansel still leads

After 119 km, Stéphane Peterhansel still leads his team-mate Mattias Ekström. Sébastien Loeb has moved up to third place, 1’40’’ behind his countryman.

Orlando Terranova occupies fourth place, a little less than three minutes behind Mister Dakar. Henk Lategan has also ably redressed the balance because he has climbed up to sixth with the same time as Carlos Sainz. Nasser Al-Attiyah, after also suffering a puncture, is now 11th, more than 5 minutes behind “Peter”.

10:59 Car: Loeb is not holding back

After 86 km, Stéphane Peterhansel has regained the lead in the special ahead of Mattias Ekström by 19’’. Orlando Terranova is now third, 1’49’’ behind “Peter”. Sébastien Loeb trails his countryman by 2 minutes, but more importantly the man from Alsace has gained 2 minutes on Nasser Al-Attiyah and seems determined to make up the time lost due to a puncture shortly after the start.

10:48 Car: Roma breaks down

Nani Roma has ground to a halt after 43 km due to a mechanical problem and is unsure of the time that will be necessary to repair his Prodrive and resume racing.

10:38 Car: The Audis are holding steady

With the main pretenders for victory in the car category all through the first time check, the three Audis are still in the lead: Mattias Ekström in front of Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. Orlando Terranova pointe is in fourth place, 50’’ behind the Swede. Shameer Variawa is fifth, more than a minute behind the current stage leader. Another South African, Henk Lategan, is having a more complicated day, having already lost almost two minutes to Ekström.

10:11 Car: Audi 1-2-3 at the first time-check

After 42 km, Mattias Ekström has taken the provisional lead, with an advantage of 24’’ over Stéphane Peterhansel and 37’’ over Carlos Sainz. However, there are still several drivers who have not reached WP1, such as Giniel De Villiers or Henk Lategan, the main losers on yesterday’s special.

09:59 Car: Serradori starts

Mathieu Serradori’s Century buggy suffered problems with over-heating yesterday. The French driver admitted that he had eased off to avoid damaging his machine. With almost 400 km on the menu today, he will have to be careful.

09:58 Car: Peterhansel leads, Loeb and Al-Attiyah neck and neck

At the first time check point, Stéphane Peterhansel leads the hostilities for the moment, with an advantage of 13’’ over his team-mate Carlos Sainz. Yazeed Al Rajhi is the leading Toyota driver in third place, 43’’ behind “Mister Dakar”. Sébastien Loeb, who suffered a puncture earlier in the stage, has in the end only lost 5’’ to Nasser Al-Attiyah.

 09:39 Car: Puncture for Loeb

The day has started badly for Sébastien Loeb who has suffered a puncture after 28 km. Since the Frenchman was opening the road ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah, now the Qatari will be called upon to lead the way…

09:19 Car: Loeb starts

Sébastien Loeb has got the car special underway! The Frenchman is the first driver to get to grips with the day’s stage and is opening the route ahead of his rival Nasser Al-Attiyah. Loeb confided yesterday evening that he had engine problems on the last few kilometres. He will be hoping to avoid a stroke of bad luck today.

07:05 Car: Al-Attiyah still in command

Overall leader Nasser Al-Attiyah is almost 45 minutes clear of his closest rival, Sébastien Loeb. Even when the Toyota driver does lose some time to the Frenchman, it barely makes a dent in his massive lead. Yazeed Al-Rajhi is now 53 minutes behind Loeb, but the Saudi could still crash the party and insert himself between the two top drivers. Yesterday's big losers are also men to watch in today's 395 km special, chief among them Gazoo Racing's South African duo of Henk Lategan and Giniel De Villiers.

07:00 Car: Off to Wadi ad-Dawasir

A special stretching for almost 400 km awaits the field. The long liaisons and action-packed programme make this trek to southern Saudi Arabia one of those stages that drag on and on and on. The minds and bodies of the competitors will be put to the test. The first 200 kilometres of the special will be nothing but sand and dunes as far as the eye can see, as the competitors jump from one valley to another. Eventually, the landscapes will change at the end of the day… in the evening or at night, as many entrants will be delayed by the complexity of the stage.
