DAKAR RALLY 2022
Saudi Arabia
1-14 January
Stage   Wadi Ad Dawasir > Wadi Ad Dawasir
Tuesday, January 11th 2022

13:28 Car: De Villiers wins his 18th stage on the Dakar

Giniel De Villiers has won the day’s special in front of Henk Lategan and Nasser Al-Attiyah, with the Qatari depriving Mattias Ekström of a second consecutive podium finish.

Behind the Toyota trio and the Audi, Sébastien Loeb has driven his Prodrive into fifth place, 2’11’’ behind De Villiers, meaning he has lost more than one minute to Al-Attiyah.

13:18 Car: De Villiers leads at the finish

Giniel De Villiers has reached the finishing line on the day’s special with a lead of less than ten seconds over his countryman Henk Lategan. Mattias Ekström has provisionally climbed onto the day’s podium a little more than two minutes behind, but Nasser Al-Attiyah has not yet finished…

12:45 Car: Duel between Loeb and Al-Attiyah

After 199 km, Sébastien Loeb has regained time on Giniel De Villiers, but so has Nasser Al-Attiyah. As a result, there is still a one-minute gap between the top two in the general rankings. The forthcoming specials are also very short, so winning time back promises to be difficult for the Frenchman if his Toyota rival continues to be so consistent.

12:36 Car: A special of contrasts for Audi

Mattias Ekström, who is opening the way today, is battling for the provisional podium after 199 km a little more than one minute behind Giniel De Villiers.

The Swede has been overtaken by Nasser Al-Attiyah who climbs into third place. As for the other members of the Audi clan, Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz have both lost a little more than three minutes.

12:19 Car: Small time loss for Loeb, but gains for Serradori

After 160 km (just after the neutralisation point), De Villiers still leads the hostilities with a lead of 16’’ over Henk Lategan and 52’’ over Mattias Ekström.

Nasser Al-Attiyah still trails by less than a minute, but Sébastien Loeb has lost some time and now trails De Villiers by 2 minutes and Al-Attiyah by 1 minute. Against the official team drivers, privateer Mathieu Serradori continues to perform well and has moved two seconds ahead of Loeb.

11:55 Car: De Villiers takes the lead

After one South African, here comes another. After 118 km, Henk Lategan has lost a little less than 30’’ and has lost the lead to his team-mate Giniel De Villiers. Sébastien Loeb has also taken advantage to move into second, 10’’ behind the current stage leader. Nasser Al-Attiyah is in control less than one minute behind and has only lost a few crumbs in terms of time to Loeb.

11:36 Car: Lategan still leads

After 80, Henk Lategan is still in command of the stage, but the South African now has a lead of less than 30’’ over the two Frenchmen, Stéphane Peterhansel and Sébastien Loeb, who has moved back into third place. Giniel De Villiers is only 40’’ behind the current stage leader. However, Mattias Ekström, who is opening the way, has lost a minute to the South African, as has Nasser Al-Attiyah.

11:22 Car: Serradori and Minaudier are in the game

After 80 km, Mathieu Serradori and his co-pilot Loïc Minaudier are pitting themselves against the Toyotas, Audis and Prodrives. With their Century buggy, the French duo are currently in eighth place, a little more than 1’30’’ behind Henk Lategan, making it a fine beginning to the morning for them.

11:17 Car: Al-Attiyah closes in but then slips back

At the first check point, Nasser Al-Attiyah was in second place nine seconds behind Henk Lategan, but the Qatari has lost more than one minute to the South African at the next time check point (after 118 km). Since the special is much shorter than yesterday’s, the gaps at the finishing line should not be too considerable (except in the case of an exceptional event…).

10:57 Car: Toyota dominating for the moment

After 40 km, Henk Lategan has taken the lead by 10’’ over Nasser Al-Attiyah and 15’’ over Giniel De Villiers. However, the two Audis driven by Stéphane Peterhansel and Mattias Ekström are not far behind, trailing by only 15’’. Sébastien Loeb, who was fined yesterday evening, is 24’’ behind the current stage leader. It is a closely fought battle, but only 13 drivers have reached CP1 so far.

10:48 Car: Lachaume 2 hours outside the top 10

After missing the 2021 edition due to Covid-19, Pierre Lachaume is back this year with the aim of finishing in the top 10, a goal that has slipped through his hands several times, like in 2020, when he had to exit the race 50 km from the finish of the penultimate special with this objective almost in his grasp.

At the start of stage 9, the Frenchman, who finished 16th yesterday 20 minutes behind the winner, occupies 20th place in the general rankings, almost 2 hours outside the top 10. With four days until the end of the rally, it will be difficult to meet his challenge, but as we all know, anything is possible on the Dakar!

10:35 Car: Despres continues his project for 2023

Although he had to make many attempts at crossing the numerous dunes on stage 8, Cyril Despres and his co-pilot Taye Perry reached the finish of the special in 15th position, 18’45’’ behind Mattias Ekström’s Audi. Behind the wheel of a Peugeot 3008, the Frenchman is continuing the project started last year with explorer Mike Horn which involves collecting as much information possible in the run-up to competing with a hydrogen-powered 4x4 in 2023.

10:27 Car: Chicherit is not giving up

After suffering a mechanical problem with his bioethanol-powered GCK Thunder, Guerlain Chicherit awaited his assistance truck and re-joined the bivouac by the road route.

The Frenchman, who is back on the Dakar for the first time since 2016, is ready to take starter’s orders this morning. With the company he founded, GCK, his ambition is to compete with the first hydrogen-powered vehicle capable of winning the rally by 2024-2025.

10:15 Car: Loeb penalised yesterday

Sébastien Loeb lost a spare wheel on yesterday’s special. The rules stipulate that when such an event occurs, the competitor in question must retrieve it.

The Frenchman argued in his defence that he was not aware that he had lost it. Indeed, the wheel fell from its casing whilst the Loeb was in the heat of the action. He has received a fine, but no time penalty. It is somewhat of a blessing in disguise, because a further time loss would have dented his hopes of catching Al-Attyiah.

10:05 Car: Ekström kicks off proceedings

Mattias Ekström, winner for the very first time yesterday, has started the ninth special behind the wheel of his Audi RS Q e-tron. His team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel has started three minutes later and will also be trying to win with the new Audi hybrid.

07:30 Car: The Dakar caravan takes a trip around Wadi Ad-Dawasir

The loop around Wadi Ad-Dawasir will be start later than scheduled in order to allow the stragglers from the previous day to stay in the game: by this point in the rally, the endurance of the competitors and their machines has become a decisive factor.

The presence of mountains followed by tracks that wind their way around the canyons will require a different a significantly different approach to driving. Although there will be less sand, this stage is still a difficult one, not least because of the navigation.
