Stage 10  Wadi Ad Dawasir > Bisha

12:22 Moto: Major reshuffle as VBA moves into the overall lead at the finish

Leading from the front after Honda's Brabec and Cornejo made a navigation blunder and his teammate Benavides withdrew from the race, Walkner seems to have also made a mistake in the finale, allowing the rest of the field to catch up with him.

He came in 15′55″ down on the fastest time, set by Toby Price. Sunderland was also off the pace at 11′18″, while Barreda came in fith at 3′21″, VBA fourth at 3′35″ and Quintanilla ninth at 7′05″. VBA seized the overall lead for the second time this year.

He now has 4′15″ on Quintanilla, 5′59″ on Sunderland, 6′47″ on Barreda, who is back in contention for the title, and 8′24″ on the biggest loser of the day, Walkner, who slumped to fifth place at 8′24″. The Dakar is never over before it is over!

11:38 Moto: It never rains but it pours for KTM

After Kevin Benavides was forced to withdraw from the really due to a mechanical at km 134, Matthias Walkner went through the last time check with a deficit of 7′24″ to stage leader Quintanilla.

Walkner is not only surrendering the overall lead, but even falling from the virtual podium, now with Sunderland, Quintanilla and Van Beveren.

11:11 Moto: Walkner still on top of things

Toby Price topped the standings at the km 258 neutralisation, the penultimate time check before the finish, with three minutes separating the top 7.

Walkner held the lead in the virtual overall by 54″ over Sunderland, 2′31″ over Quintanilla and 4′10″ over Van Beveren, who thereby slipped from the podium. There is clear daylight between the leading quartet and the rest of the field.

10:25 Moto: Barreda limits the damage as Price strikes back

257 km into the special, Joan Barreda, who is still nursing an injured shoulder, has gained a minute compared to the previous time check and is now 4′22″ down.

Toby Price has been moving up the field slowly but steadily after starting in seventeenth place. The Australian was just 22 seconds off the pace at km 212… Could he be first at the next checkpoint?

10:07 Moto: Quintanilla the man of the hour?

212 km into the race, Sam Sunderland still holds second place in the virtual overall by 40' over Pablo Quintanilla. The Chilean is defending Honda's honour. 1'29' down on the leader, Matthias Walkner is acquitting himself quite well at the front of the race.

09:47 Moto: Quintanilla takes the lead

Joan Barreda is losing over 5 minutes after the neutralisation, but Cornejo is doing even worse at over 17 minutes down!

Pablo Quintanilla now leads with a minute and a half to spare over Matthias Walkner and sits in third place in the virtual overall, but a win today could put him in a difficult starting position tomorrow. Meanwhile, Walkner is riding conservatively and losing very little time to some of his adversaries despite opening the road.

09:27 Moto: Barreda gaining on Walkner

170 km into the special, Joan Barreda has expanded his lead a bit more and now has a minute over teammates Pablo Quintanilla and Nacho Cornejo. Maciej Giemsa is still holding his own among the factory riders. The Pole is fourth on the road, one second clear of Toby Price and two ahead of Matthias Walkner.

09:00 Moto: Benavides throws in the towel

A mechanical 133 km into the special has forced Kevin Benavides to withdraw and put paid to his title defence prospects. After GasGas and Husqvarna, the other teams fielded by the factory in Mattighoffen, it is KTM's turn to lose a rider. Matthias Walkner, the only KTM biker still in contention, is currently losing 1'32' to Joan Barreda at km 170.

08:54 Moto: Barreda ahead at km 84

Joan Barreda is leading the stage at km 84, followed by his teammate Nacho Cornejo and Kevin Benavides, who will plummet down the standings at the next checkpoint. The other Benavides, Luciano, is 19 seconds back in fourth place. Sam Sunderland started in 14th place and is conceding just under a minute to Barreda.

08:50 Moto: Benavides hit by a mechanical!

Kevin Benavides's bike has broken down. The Argentinian started the day in fifth place overall, 10'22' down on the leader and 30' ahead of Joan Barreda. These two riders in the middle reaches of the top 10 were fighting hard to place themselves on the podium. It's a crushing blow!

08:32 Moto: Benavides at a standstill for 10 minutes

Drama in the desert! Defending champion Kevin Benavides has been stationary at km 133 for 10 minutes or so. The Argentinian, 10 minutes down in the general standings, will pay a heavy price.

08:29 Moto: Van Beveren and Quintanilla neck and neck

85 km into the special, Pablo Quintanilla and Adrien Van Beveren are tied in third place in the virtual overall! The Chilean has made up 45 seconds on the Frenchman at the checkpoint, exactly the same time that separated them this morning.

08:20 Moto: Sunderland trailing by 15 seconds

Sam Sunderland has just gone through WP1 with a slim 15-second deficit to Maciej Giemza. Hot on the heels of the GasGas biker, Toby Price has no choice but to go all out if he is to win the Dakar outright for the third time.

08:01 Moto: Giemza/Barreda in the provisional lead

Maciej Giemza and his Husqvarna are showing the factory riders how it's done with the fastest time so far at the first intermediate time check, tied with Joan Barreda. The two leaders are 7 seconds clear of defending champion Kevin Benavides and 12 ahead of Matthias Walkner, but watch out for Sam Sunderland, who has yet to reach WP1.

07:38 Moto: Melot gains time on Engel

Benjamin Melot claimed his third consecutive stage win in the Original by Motul category yesterday. The Frenchman put 3 minutes into Charan Moore and 8 into Mário Patrão, but even more importantly, more than 10 into Milan Engel, second overall.

Melot is now within about 20 minutes of the Czech and can contemplate an assault on the middle step of the podium. Arūnas Gelažninkas still holds the lead by close to 55 minutes over Engel.

07:23 Moto: Who will come out on top?

Overall leader Matthias Walkner is scheduled to start in fourth place. The Austrian will be taking on the role of the hunted, but he can always rely on Nacho Cornejo and Kevin Benavides, who will be ahead of him on the track and can no longer hold back in their attempt to drag themselves back into contention.

Sam Sunderland, starting 14th, is in prime position to defend his second place. The fight between Adrien Van Beveren and Pablo Quintanilla, separated by less than a minute in the general standings, will also be fierce.

 07:13 Moto: Cornejo sets off

Nacho Cornejo was the first biker to start the tenth special. The Chilean, who was left ruing his mistake in the opening stage, is seventh overall, more than half an hour down on Matthias Walkner. Will he manage to overcome the challenge of opening the way and narrow down that deficit?
