12.01.2022: DAKAR RALLY 2022 Saudi Arabia 1-14 January Stage 10 Wadi Ad Dawasir > Bisha Wednesday, January 12th 2022 13:38 Car: Peterhansel almost level with Vatanen

DAKAR RALLY 2022
Saudi Arabia
1-14 January
Stage 10  Wadi Ad Dawasir > Bisha
Wednesday, January 12th 2022

13:38 Car: Peterhansel almost level with Vatanen

Stéphane Peterhansel has won today's stage, following in the footsteps of his Audi teammates, Carlos Sainz and Mattias Ekström, in his new RS Q e-tron. He has now claimed 49 Dakar stages in the car category, one fewer than all-time recordman Ari Vatanen.

13:33 Car: Loeb gains almost 1'30' on Al-Attiyah

Sébastien Loeb crossed the finish line 14' down on Henk Lategan. The Frenchman blitzed the last part of the special to gain 1'25' on Nasser Al-Attiyah. Every little helps!

13:29 Car: Lategan, Al-Attiyah and De Villiers wrap it up

The three Toyota drivers have just reached the finish of today's special, but we'll only have a clear picture of the result once Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz have crossed the finish line. The Frenchman could finally take his first win in the Audi RS Q e-tron.

13:24 Car: Prokop suffers a mechanical

Martin Prokop, who started the special in eighth place overall, was hit by a mechanical at km 212 an hour ago. The Czech reckons it'll still take him another hour before he can get going again.

13:19 Car: Peterhansel plays it safe as Loeb gains time

327 km into the special, at the last time check before the finish, Stéphane Peterhansel leads Carlos Sainz by just over two minutes and Henk Lategan by just over three.

Sébastien Loeb is in provisional fourth place at 4′28″, but most importantly, the BRX driver has moved ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah by more than a minute. Mathieu Serradori is just over 20 seconds behind Al-Attiyah. Finally, the winners of the previous two stages, Mattias Ekström and Giniel De Villiers, are having an off day and losing close to ten minutes.

12:40 Car: Serradori close behind Loeb

257 km into the special, Mathieu Serradori is nipping at the heels of Sébastien Loeb (+4'), Jakub Przygoński (+6') and Nasser Al-Attiyah (+6'). The Century driver, only 4'41' behind Stéphane Peterhansel, is again going toe to toe with the factory drivers.

12:15 Car: Al-Attiyah and Loeb go wheel to wheel

257 km into the special, Nasser Al-Attiyah is 4′35″ behind Stéphane Peterhansel, still in the lead ahead of Carlos Sainz and Henk Lategan. Sébastien Loeb is just two seconds behind his Qatari rival. At this rate, the Prodrive man will run out of track before catching up!

11:43 Car: Loeb losing time!

212 km into the special, Sébastien Loeb is shipping over 4'30' to fellow Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel and over a minute to his rival, Nasser Al-Attiyah. Peterhansel is pressing the advantage and now leads Carlos Sainz by 1'45'. Monsieur Dakar's first win in the Audi RS Q e-tron seems increasingly within reach.

11:11 Car: Few changes at km 170

Stéphane Peterhansel still leads Carlos Sainz and Henk Lategan at km 170, with less than a minute separating the three men. Meanwhile, Sébastien Loeb has got rid of Mattias Ekström and is charging towards the podium. Nasser Al-Attiyah is playing it safe half a minute behind Loeb.

10:44 Car: Gap growing as Loeb forges ahead

Stéphane Peterhansel clocked the fastest time at km 127, 14 seconds ahead of Carlos Sainz. Henk Lategan is right behind the two Audis at 36 seconds, while Sébastien Loeb is putting over half a minute into Nasser Al-Attiyah.

10:20 Car: Loeb overtakes Al-Attiyah

Sébastien Loeb and Nasser Al-Attiyah have reached WP2, with the Frenchman now ahead by a meagre 12 seconds. Carlos Sainz is still in the lead, chased by Stéphane Peterhansel, who is still hunting for his first victory in the Audi RS Q e-tron.

10:00 Car: Sainz already in the lead

Sixth off the line this morning, Carlos Sainz is now leading at WP1 with less than 10' to spare over his Audi teammates, Stéphane Peterhansel and Mattias Ekström. Nasser Al-Attiyah is 22' down, with Sébastien Loeb at 35'. This special could be one of the closest run yet!

09:39 Car: Serradori and Minaudier get going

The best buggy drivers in the two previous stages, Mathieu Serradori and his co-driver, Loïc Minaudier, are starting today's special in seventh place.

The Century duo went toe to toe with the works cars yesterday and have made it into the top 10 overall. Serradori is hungry for more: 'We know we've still got a lot to say in the 2022 edition', as he explained yesterday evening.

09:21 Car: De Villiers leads the charge

Giniel De Villiers was the first car driver to hit the road. The South African will be racing ahead of his Toyota stablemates Henk Lategan and Nasser Al-Attiyah. Mattias Ekström will be first off the line for Audi. Starting in fifth place, Sébastien Loeb and his co-driver will be men to watch, although they will also have to be on high alert to avoid navigation errors.

09:05 Car: 5-minute penalty for Al-Attiyah

Nasser Al-Attiyah and his co-driver, Mathieu Baumel, did not wear their seat belts and frontal head restraints correctly for approximately 1′45″ after stopping to change a puncture in stage 8. The stewards reviewed the footage and identified this breach of the rules.

As a result, the Toyota crew has been handed down a 5-minute penalty that cuts their lead over Sébastien Loeb and Fabian Lurquin to 34′05″.

 06:49 Car: Off to Bisha!

This 375 km special is particularly easy on the eyes. A rich tapestry of landscapes and colours will keep spectators in awe, while the competitors will have a blast in what will no doubt be one of the fastest specials in this edition.

However, it is worth keeping in mind that haste makes waste, especially when it comes to navigating the myriad intersections that are the signature trait of Saudi routes.
