13.01.2022: DAKAR RALLY 2022 Saudi Arabia 1-14 January Stage 11 Bisha > Bisha Thursday, January 13th 2022 14:10 Car: Sainz pockets his 41st success

DAKAR RALLY 2022
Saudi Arabia
1-14 January
Stage 11   Bisha > Bisha
Thursday, January 13th 2022

14:10 Car: Sainz pockets his 41st success

Carlos Sainz has won for the second time this year behind the wheel of his Audi RS Q e-tron. “El Matador” has managed to keep his rivals at a distance to triumph for the 41st time of his career on the Dakar.

It is also Audi’s fourth victory this year, which is not at all bad for the first participation of the German constructor’s hybrid vehicle.

14:02 Car: 4’21’’!

At the finishing line on the day’s special, Sébastien Loeb has regained 4’21’’ on Nasser Al-Attiyah. With 164 km of special on tomorrow’s programme, regaining more than 28 minutes in the general rankings looks difficult for the Prodrive driver, but as we know, on the Dakar it is not over until the finishing line has been crossed!

13:46 Car: Loeb regains 4 minutes

After 303 km (at the last time check point before the finishing line), the gap between Sébastien Loeb and Nasser Al-Attiyah is now almost 4 minutes. The Frenchman is not giving up and is set on putting his Toyota rival under pressure until the end of the rally tomorrow.

13:44 Car: Sainz reaches the finish

Carlos Sainz has just reached the finishing line on the day’s special. The Spaniard has led since the 126-km mark and should have done enough to win the stage, but we will have to await his rivals such as Lucio Álvarez and Sébastien Loeb to discover the composition of the day’s podium.

13:26 Car: Loeb claws back 3 minutes

After 257 km, Nasser Al-Attiyah now trails the best time established by Carlos Sainz by 5 minutes. The Spaniard still leads, but more significantly, the Qatari driver has conceded almost three minutes to Sébastien Loeb. It is still not sufficient to make a big difference in the general rankings, but it is still a good thing for the moment.

12:50 Car: The gap closes on Sainz

After 213 km, Carlos Sainz still leads, but there is a feisty battle going on not far behind him. Lucio Álvarez and Sébastien Loeb trail by a little less than two minutes. Mattias Ekström, Nani Roma and Giniel De Villiers are ready to pounce, less than 10’’ behind.

Nasser Al-Attiyah has made up some of the time lost at the beginning of the special and now trails the Spaniard by a little more than 4 minutes.

12:22 Car: Loeb gains ground

Sébastien Loeb has really buckled down to the task! The nine times winner of the WRC has moved to within 1’46’’ of Carlos Sainz and has extended his lead over Nasser Al-Attiyah by more than 2 minutes. Stéphane Peterhansel has clawed back a few seconds, but still trails the current stage leader by a little less than 6 minutes.

12:10 Car: Mechanical problem for Lategan

Henk Lategan has had another stroke of bad luck after 80 km and has been at a standstill for almost one hour due to a mechanical problem. The South African still needs a dozen minutes to solve his problem before resuming the stage.

12:03 Car: The top twenty within 10 minutes!

At the second time check point, Carlos Sainz still leads the dance more than one minute ahead of Lucio Álvarez and almost two in front of Nani Roma’s Prodrive. Mattias Ekström has put the second Audi 2’14’’ behind his team-mate. Between Sainz and Christian Lavieille, 23rd on the day’s special, the gap is only just over ten minutes!

11:39 Car: Serradori on Al-Attiyah’s wheel

Once again, Mathieu Serradori is battling with the official drivers. After 126 km, the Frenchman is only 40’’ behind the Toyota of Nasser Al-Attiyah. After experiencing over-heating problems in the dunes several days ago, the Century buggy is among the leading protagonists on the day’s special so far.

11:33 Car: Al-Attiyah concedes time to Loeb

After 126 km, Nasser Al-Attiyah trails Carlos Sainz by 4’07’’ but more importantly he has lost approximately 1’30’’ to Sébastien Loeb. The Frenchman continues to glean seconds but will have to be wary on the second half of the special, made up of soft dunes and difficult navigation.

11:15 Car: Peterhansel loses 6 minutes

Yesterday’s winner Stéphane Peterhansel has reached the second time check point more than 6 minutes down on his team-mate Carlos Sainz. As for Sébastien Loeb, he has lost almost 2’40’’ to the Spaniard, though it is difficult to establish a trend on the stage because most of the protagonists have not yet reached 126 km.

11:05 Car: Roma moves into second

Nani Roma, who was the 18th driver to start this morning, has moved into the wake of Lucio Álvarez after 42 km. The Spaniard is only nine seconds behind the Argentinean and Giniel De Villiers, winner of stage 9, trails by 15’’. However, hasty conclusions should be avoided because only a few drivers have reached WP1 so far.

10:33 Car: Al-Attiyah leads Loeb for the moment

After 42 km, Nasser Al-Attiyah has lost a little less than one minute to Lucio Álvarez who currently leads the stage. However, the Toyota driver leads Sébastien Loeb by approximately twenty seconds. Orlando Terranova trails Álvarez by just eight seconds.

10:10 Car: Žala at the start

Now Vaidotas Žala has got to grips with the day’s special. Two years ago, the Mini driver became the very first Lithuanian stage winner on the Dakar. This year, two more of his countrymen have joined this very exclusive club: Laisvydas Kancius in the quad race and Rokas Baciuška yesterday in the SSV category.

On completion of stage 10, Žala finished 12th, less than 10 minutes behind Stéphane Peterhansel, and did not fail to salute the excellent work accomplished by his co-pilot Paulo Fiuza, who has notably navigated alongside none other than Stéphane Peterhansel and Orlando Terranova.

10:09 Car: Discreet but efficient from Halpern

Since the beginning of the 44th edition of the Dakar, Sebastian Halpern and his co-pilot Bernardo Graue have not left the top 10 in the general rankings. Behind the wheel of his X-Raid Mini for the team he joined last year, Halpern, who finished second in the quad category in 2011, has made a comeback after a three-year absence during which he devoted his time to his family and business.

The Argentinean has set himself the goal of finishing in the top 10 and for the moment his mission is on the way to being accomplished. Yesterday, the Mini crew finished in eighth place behind Yazeed Al Rajhi, equalling their second-best result on this edition of the Dakar.

10:02 Car: Serradori, the thorn in the side of the official teams

On completion of stage 10, Mathieu Serradori and his co-pilot Loïc Minaudier once again played the role of party poopers by making life difficult for the official vehicles. The Century crew completed the special with the ninth best time, 7’31’’ behind Stéphane Peterhansel’s Audi and several seconds from Lucio Álvarez.

It was the fifth top 10 finish for car #212 this year, which also features among the top ten in the general rankings: “We really played our cards right,” underlined Serradori yesterday, “(…) We are still in the top 10 which shows just how consistent we are this year”.

09:41 Car: Peterhansel starts

Stépahane Peterhansel is the first car driver to start the 11th special. However, all eyes are set on the duel involving Nasser Al-Attiyah and Sébastien Loeb. Soft dunes and several bits of tricky navigation are on the day’s menu and anything can still happen. With a deficit of 32’40’’ on the Qatari general rankings leader, the task looks to be a difficult one for the man from Alsace.
