Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Entries in Three Classes Across Two IMSA Racing Series Shift Focus to Pre-Race Preparation for the 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona Following a Victorious Roar Before the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway

Defending race winners Winward Racing will start this weekend’s 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona from the GT Daytona (GTD) class pole position after a victory in Sunday’s Rolex 24 Qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway in the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3. Russell Ward and Lucas Auer co-drove to the win in the 100-minute qualifying race and will be joined in the 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona by Philip Ellis and Mikael Grenier as Winward pursues its second-straight victory in America’s premier 24-hour race.

A total of 10 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams are competing at Daytona in three classes across a pair of IMSA racing series in the season-opening events for both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.

While Winward was the top performing GTD class Mercedes-AMG GT3 entry in the 100-minute sprint that set the grid for this weekend’s Rolex 24, the No. 15 Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Dirk Mueller and Austin Cindric rebounded from a qualifying incident to finish third in the debuting GTD Pro class.

Mueller and Cindric, who co-drive with Patrick Assenheimer in the Rolex 24, charged from last in the qualifying race to finish third and earn an inside row two starting spot on the Rolex 24 GTD Pro grid.

Winward’s GTD victory Sunday followed a front-row lockout by Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams in qualifying Saturday for the qualifying race. Ward started the No. 57 on the outside front row alongside the No. 75 SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 that Kenny Habul drove to his first career IMSA pole position in Saturday qualifying.

Habul, who paired with returning Daytona teammate Raffaele Marciello, led the opening two laps of Sunday’s qualifier before Ward passed for the lead. Habul and Marciello kept the No. 57 in GTD top-five contention for the remainder of the race to lock down the outside second row position on the Rolex 24 GTD grid with a fourth-place finish.

Habul and Marciello co-drive the No. 75 with Luca Stolz and Fabian Schiller in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The SunEnergy1 team shared the GTD podium with race winners Winward in a one-two Mercedes-AMG GT3 finish in last year’s Rolex 24, and now are coming into the race with one goal - the first class victory.

Starting fifth on the Rolex 24 GTD grid is the No. 32 Gilbert Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 that co-drivers Mike Skeen and Guy Cosmo put through a competitive run in Sunday’s qualifying race. Skeen led three laps as the field cycled through green flag pit stops at mid-race, while closing driver Cosmo continued the competitive pace in the run to the checkered flag.

The Gilbert Korthoff entry, that also includes Stevan McAleer and Scott Andrews in its Rolex 24 lineup, joined Winward and SunEnergy1 in filling three of the top-five GTD finishing positions with Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing entries. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 trio were the only teams to officially lead laps in Sunday’s qualifying race.

Alegra Motorsports made it four Mercedes-AMG GT3 entries in the first three rows of the Rolex 24 GTD grid with a sixth-place qualifying race finish for Michael de Quesada and Linus Lundqvist in the No. 28 Alegra Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3. Winward is on pole in row one, SunEnergy1 is on the outside of row two in fourth and Gilbert Korthoff and Alegra have locked out row three in the fifth and sixth grid spots, respectively.

Alegra’s complete Rolex 24 driver lineup includes team and Mercedes-AMG GT3 veteran Daniel Morad and reigning Mercedes-AMG DTM Champion Maximilian Götz, who makes his Daytona debut.

The record six-car Mercedes-AMG GT3 entry for the 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona includes the GTD Pro class No. 97 Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Cooper MacNeil, Maro Engel, Jules Gounon and Daniel Juncadella that starts fifth on the GTD Pro grid.

In addition to the strong entry of Mercedes-AMG GT3 teams for the Rolex 24, four Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams compete in Friday’s season-opening IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge four-hour race in the top-tier Grand Sport (GS) class.

Three Mercedes-AMG GT4 entries from Murillo Racing and the No. 11 Capstone Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 of Gary Ferrera and Kris Wilson completed a productive Roar test session this past weekend in preparation for the Pilot Challenge race.

Murillo’s entries included a pair of new Mercedes-AMG GT4s for long time Murillo Racing teammates Jeff Mosing and Eric Foss and the duo of Christian Szymczak and Kenny Murillo.

Mosing and Foss compete in the No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4, Szymczak and Murillo co-drive the No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4, and the third team entry is wheeled by Brent Mosing and Tim Probert in the No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4.

The top Mercedes-AMG GT4 lap of the Roar test was in Saturday morning’s third of the weekend’s five sessions. Szymczak clocked in second fastest in that session in the Murillo No. 72 entry with a lap quick enough to rank a solid 14th overall in the weekend’s combined standings.

Foss in the No. 56 and Murillo in the No. 72 also recorded quick laps within a second of the fastest competitor and ranking in the top 20 overall fastest laps of the weekend.

The 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona official schedule begins Wednesday, January 26, with a one-hour Michelin Pilot Challenge practice session.

Four WeatherTech Championship practice sessions are scheduled over Thursday and Friday in addition to GS qualifying Thursday and the four-hour season-opening Pilot Challenge race Friday at 1:35 p.m. EST.

The 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona starts at 1:40 p.m. EST on Saturday, January 29, with live coverage beginning at 1:30 p.m. EST on the flagship NBC network.

International viewers can watch all of the races and more from the Rolex 24 weekend live at www.IMSA.tv.

Russell Ward, Driver – No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“The purpose of the Roar is to shake the dust off and get everybody up to speed, and the crew did a fantastic job getting everything ready, especially after the crash we had at Road Atlanta.

It’s awesome to come back here and be right up there, right on pace. It gives me a feeling that we had last year closing the Roar out, that that we are in a really good position, but you never know what will happen in the Rolex 24. You have to keep it clean. If we can do what we did in this 100-minute race for 24 hours, it will come to us naturally. It’s a really good start to the week."

Lucas Auer, Driver – No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“For me, it was important to get some laps in and see how the DPis and LMP2s would overtake and where I needed to position myself. Russell did a great job, and from my moment in the car on I just tried to bring it home. I tried to learn from every lap. For me, this is quite new, so I tried to learn every lap and get it home for the victory.

Two or three cars were closing in on me near the end, so for me it was important to keep my focus. Obviously, I wanted to keep our lead, which I managed to do, but it was a very big learning curve for next week. The traffic management is really quite crazy. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is just overall a really strong package, which gives you confidence. We have a car that is a great all arounder and that makes the Mercedes-AMG GT3 package special.”

Kenny Habul, Driver – No. 75 SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“I am a little more in tune than I normally would be coming here at the start of the year. I raced in Abu Dhabi a couple of weeks ago and we finished third overall in the Dubai 24H last week. I have been driving well, staying sharp. I am happy, I am happy for everyone. We just put this team together last minute.

There are guys that barely speak English. I think we have eight different nationalities on the team, and some guys just met each other on the first day of the Roar. It was just one of those last-minute things, but we have a really good Mercedes-AMG GT3. It can be really difficult out there, looking in your mirrors for the prototypes, then a huge field of GT cars, which is good.

It’s good for Daytona and it’s good for the sport, but it’s a lot of cars on this track. It’s hard to imagine what that is going to look like in the middle of the night, especially if it rains and there is all that craziness, but generally the level of driving here is higher. It’s a big track, there is a lot of room, but it will be more challenging than previous years, that’s for sure.”

Maro Engel, Driver – No. 97 Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3: “
For me, last year’s victory was a childhood dream coming true as Daytona is one of the world’s most famous race tracks. Now, my goal is to be successful in the new GTD Pro class together with my teammates as well. It is a very special race as it is the 60th anniversary. Even though the competition will be very strong, I am very optimistic. We have a fast and reliable car that the other manufacturers have to beat first.”

Austin Cindric, Driver – No. 15 Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“We finished better than I started. A pretty good improvement over qualifying. I got to see a lot of the field starting from the back. I got to understand the strengths of our Mercedes-AMG GT3 compared to the others. I made up a lot of positions and gave the car over to Dirk. We had a nice smooth driver exchange. He kept it moving up the field and we got a lot of data for the race weekend. It is a good start for us. I’m looking forward to this weekend.”

Michael de Quesada, Driver – No. 28 Alegra Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3:
"We maximized results. We had a different balance than what we had in the previous practices, and I know the team is working hard to get our Mercedes-AMG GT3 dialed in for the Rolex 24 coming up."

Linus Lundqvist, Driver – No. 28 Alegra Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3:"It was a good qualifying race and good experience for me. We have a little bit of work to do on the setup, but overall, the car is performing well. Sixth is an excellent way to start the Rolex 24 race.”

Christian Szymczak, Driver – No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “
I am super excited to be part of the Murillo squad again and the IMSA Michelin Pilot GS series is going to really be a good challenge for us. We like the idea of taking it on and hopefully being able to compete at the sharp end of the field.

We are happy so far with how things went at the Roar test, particularly with a new car, and we just have to execute properly and stay consistent. I am definitely more of a sprint driver, I kind of like throwing down laps, but endurance racing is a challenge to save tires, brakes and I do like that different discipline as well. A different challenge but fun in its own way.”

Jeff Mosing, Driver – No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4:
“It’s always great starting the season out with two back-to-back weekends at Daytona, particularly this year with a new Mercedes-AMG GT4. The car performed flawlessly, just like we thought, no problems whatsoever and it is great to get things started and smoothed out at the Roar without the pressure of making a mistake in a race. We learned a lot this past weekend and think we will be strong in the race environment.

When we started talking to Mercedes-AMG Motorsport about changing our chassis with an updated car, they went over and above to make sure they got the car to us in due time in order to run it at the Roar. A big hats off to them for getting the shipping lined up and all of the paperwork sorted out so quickly.”
