- Letocart et Gengoux source irruption at the end of a marathon stage!

The organizers had announced that the second stage of the Ostbelgien Classic 2022, linking Eupen to Weiswampach, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, would have the air of a marathon, promising to be as long as it was difficult and intense. They have promise!

With no less than 250 kilometers to go, an impressive series of RTs and other tests, all at temperatures flirting with zero degrees, the second stage of the Ostbelgien Classic 2022 promised not to be restful. The teams in Classic+ and Classic then headed to Bütgenbach and Bullange, before reaching Amel, Recht, Rodt, Saint-Vith and Burg-Reuland, to then cross the Belgian-Luxembourg border and conclude the day at Shopping-Center Massen , in Weiswampach.

At the start of the day, there were many surprises, with a navigation error and a puncture for Yves Deflandre and Jennifer Hugo (Porsche 911), leading the race this morning, but also for Kurt Vanderspinnen and Bjorn Vanoverschelde ( Ford Cortina Lotus), while Daniel Reuter and Robert Vandevorst (Porsche 944 S2) had to give up after a regrettable incident on the road, for which they were in no way responsible.

Proof of the intensity of the debates, a good handful of crews shared the best performances of the day, with De Jaeger-De Jaeger (Porsche 911), Blaise-Lienne (Porsche 911), Deflandre-Hugo, Vanderspinnen-Vanoverschelde, Letocart-Gengoux (Opel Manta) and Lambert-Noelanders (BMW 2002). Nevertheless, it was necessary to reckon with the technical problems of some, including De Jaeger, forced to abandon it, and the errors, penalties and even crevaisons of others, to reach a provisional hierarchy before the last stage.

And this Saturday evening, in grand-ducal territory, Lucien Letocart and Baptiste Gengoux are leading the dance with 242.62 points, leading in their wake Jean-Jacques Martens and Aswin Pyck (Volvo PV444 - 264.10 pts), leaders of the FIA classification, Patrick Lambert and Yves Noelanders (281.97 pts), Jacques Evrard and Christian Bernard (Porsche 911 – 355.93 pts), as well as Yves Deflandre and Jennifer Hugo (382.99 pts). Et quand on sait que dans leur two, where we find teams such as Vanderspinnen-Vanoverschelde, Blaise-Lienne or even Kevers-Gathy (Porsche 911), where it is said that the debates are far from closed...

As for the international crews, the Brits Paul Bloxidge and Ian Canavan (VW Golf GTi) did the best on this very demanding course, finishing in 10th position overall.

In the Classic category, if André Lamotte and Joseph Polet (Lancia Fulvia) were leading the debates on Friday evening, they were overwhelmed on Saturday morning by Raymond Venier and André Lys (Lancia Fulvia Monte-Carlo). These latter finished the day with a comfortable lead over Marc and Max Schunck (Saab Sonett) on the one hand, Martin Scheiff and Yves Chantraine (Mercedes 190 E 2.3 16V) on the other.

"The day was particularly interesting, with a course of incredible variety that left traces," said organizer Michael Bartholemy. Dommage bien sûr the incident that led to the abandonment of Reuter and Vandevorst, first winners of the Ostbelgien Classic in 2019. Whatever it is, the test has not yet returned all its verdicts, because the morning of Dimanche promises to be at least selective. Head over Eupen and its Klötzerbahn, where the arrival will be judged on the stroke of 16 hours... »
