SRO Sustainability has worked to ensure that SRO Motorsports Group meets its environmental responsibilities in 2022 and beyond, with a continued emphasis on emissions reduction supported by a diversified carbon compensation portfolio.


The past year has seen SRO support new projects on four continents, bringing its environmental approach into line with the global nature of its racing activities. These include a forest management scheme on Doe Mountain in the United States, which will ensure the long-term sustainability of an 8,486-acre site that might otherwise undergo commercial timber harvesting. It is located in the state of Tennessee, where SRO has raced with GT America Powered by AWS since 2021.


SRO has lent further support to a hydroelectric power project in North Sumatera Province, Indonesia. Utilising the flow of the Asahan River to produce electricity, the plant aims to supply zero-emission energy to the Sumatera Grid. This increases SRO's sustainability efforts on the Asian continent, a key region thanks to the presence of Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS.


In Brazil, the Omega Wind Power Plants Programme has helped to provide a crucial alternative supply of electricity. As the country's economy continues to grow, wind power can help to meet the rising demand for energy while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. It will also create jobs during the construction, operation and maintenance of the site, adding a further social benefit to the scheme.


There have been a number of efforts in Europe, too. The Methane Recovery Project Princepeel Wilbertoord uses biogas, produced by methane from animal waste, to generate electricity for the local grid. As such it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and encourages clean, renewable and efficient technologies. SRO has close ties to the Netherlands, with the Zandvoort track a long-time host to Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS.


Alongside a raft of further initiatives, these projects have helped SRO to achieve 66 percent carbon neutrality in 2022, while all competitor fleets have run 100 percent carbon neutral. What’s more, SRO has also supported reforestation projects in Belgium and the United Kingdom, planting some 2,500 trees in close proximity to the Spa-Francorchamps and Snetterton circuits respectively.


But the work will not stop there: the 2023 season will see an increased offer of biofuel, while efforts to improve tyres will accelerate. These and other projects will run alongside an expanded range of global environmental actions, with a clear objective to support initiatives that are local to SRO’s on-track activities.
