Chris Van der Drift claims fifth win in Oschersleben

30.08.2008: Chris Van der Drift claims fifth win in Oschersleben

Formula Master's round 11 in Oschersleben, Germany, today marked Chris van der Drift's fifth win of the season, equalling the 2007 record set by Jérôme D'Ambrosio.

Having secured pole position in yesterday's qualifying session, van der Drift led from start to finish. The JD Motorsport driver posted quick lap times throughout the race, setting the fastest lap of 1:21.619 at the end of the 35-minute round.

Jenzer Motorsport's Fabio Leimer raced unchallenged to a second place finish, despite third-place man Michael Ammermüller catching him in the later stages of the race. Iris Project's Ammermüller claimed his third place thanks to a strong start, which saw the German driver overtake Trident Racing's Harald Schlegelmilch.

An incident involving Schlegelmilch and JD Motorsport's Sergey Afanasiev on the start/finish line demoted Schlegelmilch to a 13th place finish after the Latvian was handed a drive-through penalty. Afanasiev was forced to retire on lap four.

Finishing fourth, ADM Motorsport's Norbert Siedler successfully defended his position against Cram Competition's Marcello Puglisi throughout the 21-lap race, despite Puglisi's best efforts.

Fellow Cram Competition driver Arturo Llobell finished in sixth place, ahead of Team JVA's Josef Kral. A good start enabled 18-year-old Kral to make up four places on lap one and led to an eventh place finish along with his first two points of the season.

ISR's Tim Sandtler completed today's race in eighth place, and will start tomorrow's round 12 in pole position thanks to Formula Master's reverse grid regulations. This will be the third time the German starts a Sunday race from P1.

JD Motorsport's Chris van der Drift and Vladimir Arabazhiev claimed today's best team-mate accolade whilst Fabio Leimer's second place awarded him the best rookie of the race title.

Chris van der Drift, JD Motorsport

"It was a good race today. I got a good start, which is the most important thing and managed to pull away and create a gap from Fabio [Leimer]. It was a very comfortable race; the team and the car were both very good.

"After the first five or six laps I tried to drive consistently and keep my lead. Then I pushed a bit at the end of the race to make sure I took the win.

"It's always difficult to say how race two will go; we will have to wait and see how well we do at the start. We were quick throughout this race so there is a definite opportunity for another good finish, but we will have to take things lap by lap."

Fabio Leimer, Jenzer Motorsport

"The most important thing for us today was to try to overtake Chris [van der Drift] at the start, but it did not go so well. I was pushing at the beginning, but Chris pulled away.

"In the end, I had enough of a gap behind me to finish in second place but I was nervous during the last lap as Michael [Ammermüller] was getting faster. I had to be careful not to push too hard and lose my place, so I am happy with second."

Michael Ammermüller, Iris Project

"I had a good start and gained one position in the first corner. Fabio [Leimer] and Chris [van der Drift] were quick at the start and pulled away. I was quicker near the end of the race but it was not enough to gain another position.

"Doing well here, in my home country is very special. It's always better on the podium at a home race; there are always a lot more people supporting you. If the spectators know that you are from their country it makes it a lot more fun to watch a race and be able to cheer for someone when they are near the front. You can feel that as you drive."
