Mit einem echten Klassiker beginnt für Porsche die Motorsportsaison 2009. Bei den 24 Stunden von Daytona, dem
traditionsreichen Auftaktrennen der Grand-Am Series in den USA, sind am Wochenende insgesamt neun Porsche-Werksfahrer sowie die zwei Porsche-Junioren am Start, um an die großen Erfolge des Zuffenhausener Sportwagenherstellers anzuknüpfen: Mit 20 Siegen ist Porsche der erfolgreichste Hersteller in der Geschichte des legendären Langstreckenrennens in Florida.
„Dieses Rennen ist gleich zum Saisonauftakt eine große Herausforderung für unsere Fahrer und Teams“, sagt Porsche-Motorsportchef Hartmut Kristen. „Der besondere Reiz liegt vor allem darin, dass in Daytona Fahrer aus den verschiedensten Rennserien quasi auf neutralem Boden gegeneinander antreten.“
Nach zwei Meistertiteln 2007 und 2008 mit dem Porsche RS Spyder in der American Le Mans Series wechselten Timo Bernhard (Dittweiler) und Romain Dumas (Frankreich) zusammen mit Penske Racing in die Prototypen-Klasse der Grand-Am Series. Das Erfolgsteam von Roger Penske setzt in den zwölf Rennen dieser Saison ein Riley-Chassis (Startnummer 16) mit dem rund 510 PS starken Porsche-Sechszylinder-Motor ein. Dritter Fahrer in Daytona ist Ryan Briscoe (Australien), der für Penske Racing ansonsten in der amerikanischen IndyCar-Serie auf Punktejagd geht.
„Die 24 Stunden von Daytona sind schon lange eines meiner Lieblingsrennen“, sagt Timo Bernhard, der Sieger von 2003 mit einem Porsche 911 GT3-RS. „Du triffst dort auf viele starke Fahrer aus anderen Rennserien, gegen die du schon immer mal gerne fahren wolltest. Wenn du gegen die gewinnst, gibt dir das Motivation und Rückenwind für den Rest der Saison.“
Ebenfalls in der Klasse der Daytona Prototypen bringt das erfolgreiche Team Brumos Racing zwei Porsche-Riley (Startnummern 58 und 59) an den Start. Bekanntester Brumos-Fahrer neben Indy-500-Champion Buddy Rice (USA) ist Hurley Haywood (USA). Er feierte bereits 1973 den ersten seiner insgesamt fünf Daytona-Siege mit Porsche und ist damit der erfolgreichste Fahrer dieses Langstrecken-Klassikers. Mit jeweils vier Siegen werden die legendären Porsche-Piloten Rolf Stommelen und Bob Wollek in der ewigen Bestenliste der 24 Stunden von
Daytona geführt.
Stark vertreten ist Porsche mit seinen Werksfahrern traditionell in der GT-Klasse. Jörg Bergmeister (Langenfeld), Daytona-Sieger 2003 und Grand-Am-Champion 2006, startet zusammen mit Patrick Long (USA) im Porsche 911 GT3 des Teams TRG (Nr. 67). In zwei weiteren TRG-Autos (Nr. 66 und 65) fahren Emmanuel Collard (Frankreich) und Richard Lietz (Österreich) sowie Porsche-Junior Marco Holzer (Bobingen).
Wolf Henzler (Nürtingen), zusammen mit Jörg Bergmeister amtierender GT2-Meister der American Le Mans Series, ist gleich auf zwei 911 GT3 des Teams Farnbacher Loles Racing (Nr. 85 und 87) gemeldet. Porsche-Junior Martin Ragginger (Österreich) fährt im 911 GT3 von Autometrics Motorsports (Nr. 14). Sascha Maassen (Aachen) und Patrick Pilet (Frankreich) sind für Wright Motorsports (Nr. 33) im Einsatz. In der GT-Klasse sind insgesamt 31 Fahrzeuge am Start, darunter 17 Porsche 911 GT3.

Das ist die Grand American Sports Car Series
Die Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series (kurz: Grand-Am Series) ersetzte im Jahr 2000 die United States Road Racing Championships. In der Saison 2009 werden zwölf Rennen in den USA und Kanada gefahren. Traditioneller Saisonhöhepunkt ist das 24-Stunden-Rennen in Daytona. Die meisten Rennen gehen über die Distanz von 250 Meilen.
Das Starterfeld bilden zwei unterschiedliche Fahrzeugklassen: Daytona Prototypen und GT-Fahrzeuge. Sie starten mit einer Ausnahme zusammen, werden aber getrennt gewertet.
Daytona Prototypen (DP): Die Chassis der Fahrzeuge liefern Spezialhersteller wie Riley. Aus Gründen der Chancengleichheit dürfen große Automobilhersteller keine eigenen Teams einsetzen, sondern nur Motoren bereitstellen. Die Porsche-Teams Penske Racing und Brumos Racing sind mit dem Porsche 3,99-Liter-Sechszylinder
und einem Riley-Chassis am Start. Der Motor leistet in der Spezifikation für Daytona Prototypen rund 510 PS. Das Mindestgewicht der Fahrzeuge beträgt 1.021 Kilogramm.
Grand Touring (GT): Die GT-Klasse entspricht aktuell etwa der FIA GT3-Kategorie. Der Porsche 911 GT3 Cup ist einer der erfolgreichsten Rennwagen in dieser Klasse. Chancengleichheit soll über die Reifengrößen, Drehzahl und Gewicht gewährleistet werden. Das Mindestgewicht beträgt zwischen 1.043 und 1.270 Kilogramm.
Die ausgeglichenen Starterfelder sorgen für abwechslungsreiche und spannende Rennen mit harten Positionskämpfen und zahlreichen Überholmanövern. Porsche hat die GT-Meisterschaft in neun Jahren sieben Mal gewonnen, zuletzt 2007 durch Dirk Werner im Porsche 911 GT3 Cup von Farnbacher Loles Racing, und ist damit einer der erfolgreichsten Hersteller in der Geschichte der Grand-Am Series. Porsche-Werksfahrer Jörg Bergmeister holte 2006 den Titel in der Prototypen-Klasse.
