Red Bull Rallye Team : New car, new drivers, same objective

08.02.2009: 2009 Production Car World Rally Championship – Round 1 2009 Rally Norway, 12-15 February 2009 - For the Red Bull Rallye Team, Operation “Title Defense” begins in Norway

2009 Production Car World Rally Championship – Round 1 2009 Rally Norway, 12-15 February 2009

- For the Red Bull Rallye Team, Operation “Title Defense” begins in Norway
- The BRR team is pinning its hopes on the Swedish pairing of Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson – and on the
   Skoda Fabia S2000.
- The Production Car World Rally Championship will get its new season under way with Rally Norway this
coming weekend (February 12th to 15th).

The Red Bull Rallye Team is the current title holder in the world championship for production-based cars. And although the team is only entering a single car this year, the clear objective is a successful title defense!

Raimund Baumschlager’s BRR team is again in charge – everything else has changed: Sweden’s Patrik Sandell has been signed as the new driver, with compatriot Emil Axelsson as his co-driver.

Patrik Sandell is 26 years old, resides in Östersund and is regarded as a great prospect in the even greater rallying nation of Sweden. Co-driver Emil Axelsson is 25 years old, lives in Linköping and has accompanied Sandell ever since he entered rallying. Sandell/Axelsson came fourth overall in the 2008 PWRC – with a total of four podium finishes.

19 drivers have so far entered the Production Car World Rally Championship. Prokop/Tomanek (CZE/Mitsubishi), Flodin/Bergsten (SWE/Subaru) and Mikkelsen/Floene (NOR/Subaru) rank among the fiercest rivals of Sandell/Axelsson this time.

As already mentioned Sandell/Axelsson will compete in a Skoda Fabia Super 2000 – with factory support by Skoda. Josef Lank is the new Car Chief in the BRR team. The Czech had been working for the team of Raimund Baumschlager previously, now he has returned to Upper Austria.

Thus Rally Norway – with a total of 23 stages – is a premiere for the entire team. And everyone wants this premiere to be a successful one. That’s why all of the staff at BRR have been working very hard over the past few weeks.

Team boss Raimund Baumschlager:
“The Skoda is certainly a brand new challenge for us. The team has done a very good job in the run-up. We’ll see next weekend where we actually stand.”

In Norway, especially in the area around Oslo, Hamar and Lillehammer, deep winter conditions prevail at present – a thick layer of snow and ice is covering the special stages, and with a forecast of minus 30 degrees centigrade, it is bound to stay that way.

Sandell also hails from the Far North and hence should feel right at home in these wintry conditions. The car had its first run over the past two days in Sweden, where extensive tests were on the agenda near Kall. The new driver was able to gain first impressions as well.

Patrik Sandell, Sweden’s rally driver of the year 2008: “It’s certainly going to be an exciting moment – with several unknowns. A new car, a new team, a new challenge – but I think that we’re all professional enough to grow together swiftly. That’s why we want to run up front from the very start!

The tests were very promising – I’m very comfortable in the cockpit. There will certainly be a transition from the Mitsubishi, I drove earlier this week, because in the Skoda you either have no power at all or excessive amounts, so you definitely have to drive differently without turbocharger!”
