Hungarian Pole for JD Motorsport's Josef Kral

Hungarian Pole for JD Motorsport's Josef Kral

25.07.2009: JD Motorsport's Josef Kral claimed his first ever International Formula Master pole position today, for round nine of International Formula Master at the Hungaroring in Hungary.

JD Motorsport's Josef Kral claimed his first ever International Formula Master pole position today, for round nine of International Formula Master at the Hungaroring in Hungary.

The Czech driver posted a best time of 1:38.216 moments before the 40-minute qualifying session ended, despite regular pole-setter Fabio Leimer's best efforts. The pair fought hard to secure the top starting position, with Kral spinning seconds before the chequered flag. Jenzer Motorsport's Leimer had to settle for second, however, thanks to a fastest lap of 1:38.997.

Earl Bamber will start tomorrow's race in third place, after posting a quickest time of 1:39.001 on his return to the Series as part of IFM's Talent Support Programme. Fourth belonged to ISR's Alexander Rossi who completed his best lap of 1:39.065 with 10 minutes left of the session.

JD Motorsport's Sergey Afanasiev claimed today's fifth fastest time, lapping in 1:39.092 on his best run, ahead of AR Motorosport's Paul Meijer who was sixth quickest. The Dutchman acquitted himself well on his first qualifying attempt for IFM and posted a best lap of 1:39.120.

Talent Support Programme (TSP) driver Alexander Sims will start tomorrow's race in seventh place, having set a fastest time of 1:39.179 on his first outing with Formula Master, alongside ISR's Erik Janis in eighth (1:39.428).

Newcomer Samuele Buttarelli, also racing as part of TPS, secured 15th on the grid with a best lap of 1:40.545.

Eurosport's coverage for IFM's race weekend in Hungary will begin tomorrow (Saturday) with race one shown from 11.30 (CET) on Eurosport 2. Sunday's race two will be broadcasted on Eurosport International, from 22.30 (GMT).

Josef Kral, JD Motorsport

"From the first lap, I could tell the session would be quite tricky; the difference between the grip on the racing line and the rest of the track was significant because of the F1 rubber. Anyway, I did ok! I had enough speed, enough to win the race too I think.

"We'll have to see in the races tomorrow and Sunday; it's hard to know what to expect. You could be take one corner and be ok, then the next time round, you might have a difference of 10 cm on the line and there is no grip at all."

Fabio Leimer, Jenzer Motorsport

"It wasn't a very good qualifying session unfortunately; I had a lot of problems staying on the track. It was difficult to know the track conditions with such hot weather and no free practice sessions. We tried a different set-up, which didn't work; that's why the team wasn't as strong as usual. Now we're going to try to find a few things for tomorrow; the gap between Kral and I is too much at the moment!"

Earl Bamber, TSP

"It was pretty interesting session; my first time on this track and it is a really beautiful track actually. The team did an amazing job putting everything together for me; especially to qualifying P3, which was above our expectations since all the other teams had already tested here.

"Tomorrow, I think we'll have a slightly stronger package and conditions will be different since we are racing early in the morning. I'm looking forward to it though; this is the highest I've qualified all year and I'm really happy."
