Chris Wootton aiming for a sling of wins in Singapore

Australian Formula BMW Junior – Chris Wootton – is in the final stages of preparation to compete at Asia-Pacific’s most glamorous motorsport event – the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix – where Formula BMW Pacific acts as the curtain raiser to the main event.

The Singapore event is important to the 20-year-old in more ways than one. He attracts significant sponsorship support from Singapore, ensuring the week leading up to the Grand Prix he will be busy connecting with sponsors – such as First Automobile and Fraser Place, along with appearances at the One 15 Degree Marina.

After a strong performance at the only night Grand Prix on the Formula 1 calendar last year, Wootton is hoping that he can turn things around on the biggest stage there is and show his true potential in front of the Formula 1 paddock.

Wootton’s team, Eurasia Motorsport currently sits third in the Team’s Classification and is still in with a strong mathematical chance of winning that Title. Aside from the concrete canyon that lines the Marina Bay circuit, Wootton will have numerous other challenges to contend with, namely a late afternoon schedule for all sessions and the prediction of thunderstorms to go with humid temperatures well into the 30’s (C).

BEHIND THE HELMET: Chris Wootton

“In my opinion, the Singapore Grand Prix is the best event on the Formula BMW Pacific calendar, it’s a great circuit and a very unique challenge. It supports one of the best F1 events of the year and the spectacle of Formula 1 at night has no peer – it has to be seen to be believed. The people in Singapore are always friendly and the country is very clean, which is lovely. I really feel comfortable going there, it’s a fabulous place.

“I’m really hoping for a breakthrough win at the Grand Prix, there can be nothing better than winning a race in support to a Formula 1 event. We have achieved some great results this season, I hold the lap record at the Sepang circuit and have a collection of podiums and pole positions.  Overall, this event is very important to me. I have fantastic support from First Automobile, Fraser Place and the One 15 Degree Marina in Singapore. We’re really looking forward to spending some time with our sponsors leading up to the event and seeing them come out to the race.”

WHAT IS FORMULA BMW?

Formula BMW is the world’s leading entry level open-wheel Formula racing category. The Formula BMW FB02 weighs 465kg excluding driver. It is powered by a 1.2 litre four cylinder engine which accelerates to 100kph in less than four seconds and will hit a top speed of 230kph.  All cars are identical and innovations such as the FORS (Formula Rescue Seat) were developed by BMW Motorsport specifically for Formula BMW.

Formula BMW is conducted in three territories – the United States (Formula BMW Americas), with Formula 1 Grands Prix in Europe (Formula BMW Europe) and Formula BMW Pacific in pan-Asia.

WHO IS CHRIS WOOTTON?

Chris is a 20-year-old race driver from the Brisbane suburb of Birkdale. He started karting competition in 2005 and quickly showed potential – taking out Rookie of the Year honours in two classes.

At the end of 2007, Chris underwent the Formula BMW Scholarship program. He impressed the judges with not only his ability behind the wheel, but approach to the sport and fitness. He was then offered a scholarship for the 2008 Formula BMW Pacific Series.

Finishing as the second highest Rookie in the Series and seventh overall, being offered a scholarship for the second year in succession is testament to his dedication.

Aside from motorsport, Chris takes a strong interest in a majority of sports. Taking cues from his mentor – Mark Webber – he concentrates on being one of the fittest drivers around, becoming a regular in the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge. In the two Challenges he has completed, he finished in front of many well-known sportsmen and adventure racers.

Chris will chase the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific victory with Eurasia Motorsport.
