WGI teams up with Juice Energy to be powered by renewable energy

05.07.2008: WGI teams up with Juice Energy to be powered by renewable energy

The Glen is First Motorsports Venue in the U.S. to Run on 100% Renewable Energy

Officials from Watkins Glen International announced today that WGI will be the first major US motorsports facility to use renewable energy to fulfill all of its energy needs. WGI has purchased 1.03 million kWh of Green-e certified renewable energy credits (RECs), which is equal to 100% of its projected energy-use.

Juice Energy, Inc. helped facilitate the purchase, and arranged for WGI to be powered by wind turbines from across the US. The agreement with Juice Energy will guarantee the use of green energy at WGI for the next three years.

"This is a major milestone for motorsports facilities. It is great to partner with Juice Energy on the extraordinary purchase of Green-e certified wind RECs equal to 100% of our annual electricity usage," stated Craig Rust, president of Watkins Glen International. "As the premier road racing facility in North America we are now proud to be the most environmentally conscious as well."

Juice Energy is a New York-based electricity supplier that creates custom solutions to help their clients purchase renewable energy at the lowest possible cost. Juice normally utilizes solar and wind energy for its clients and helps curb their environmental impact on the world. The purchase that Juice facilitated for WGI will prevent 804 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being produced. That means that the purchase is the equivalent of taking over 170 cars off the road each year.

"Millions of people have enjoyed races at The Glen over the past 60 years," said Brian Hayduk, President and Co-Founder of Juice Energy, Inc. "We’re truly excited about our new involvement with them and look forward to helping them make a positive impact on our environment."

Terry Angstadt of the IndyCar® Series was also at the press conference today announcing the renewable energy purchase. The IndyCar Series, like WGI, was a pioneer in the quest to become energy efficient. The IndyCar Series was the first major motorsports series to go green with the use of 100% fuel-grade ethanol, a renewable fuel. WGI will now become the first track on the IndyCar Series schedule to mirror the series’ efforts in becoming energy efficient.

"The IndyCar Series brand attributes are: Speed-Technology & Innovation, Diversity and Green, so you can see what a perfectly consistent fit it is to have Watkins Glen embrace renewable energy."

Tickets for the historic 60th Anniversary Season at Watkins Glen International are on-sale now! The stars of the IndyCar Series will return to The Glen this weekend for the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen. General admission tickets for Kids 12 and under are FREE during the July 4-6 event weekend when accompanied by an adult.

The action will continue with the Centurion Boats at The Glen NASCAR Sprint Cup and Zippo 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series weekend highlights the summer action, August 7-10.
