Jordan King makes swift progress on new class bow

Young Warwickshire karting star Jordan King made impressive progress on his new class debut in the opening round of the 2009/10 Winter Series – and even if he did not come away with the result he either wanted or deserved from the weekend, he nonetheless proved that he will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

Off the back of an eye-catching maiden campaign in KF3 at both British and European level, Jordan has elected to graduate to KF2 for 2010. Whilst he headed to Shenington at something of a disadvantage with no prior dry running under his belt and none at all around the high-speed Oxfordshire circuit – though he had been rapid indeed in the wet – he swiftly showed that he has already got to grips with his new mount.

Up against four second-year KF2 drivers and some fellow class ‘rookies’, the 15-year-old and the Stuart Wright Racing (SWR) outfit for whom he competes used the weekend as an opportunity to try out different things with the pressure off. After briefly leading his first heat, some minor rear brake issues ultimately forced Jordan to settle for a close third place, less than a second shy of the winner, before he converted seventh on the grid into fifth at the chequered flag in heat two to earn a starting spot of fourth for the all-important final.

“For the first couple of laps whilst the brakes were still cool, the problem we had didn’t seem to be slowing us down too much,” explained the Harbury ace. “I got up to second, but unfortunately the problem got worse as the race went on and I ended up slowly dropping back.

“Finishing fourth was alright for our first weekend I guess, but I wasn’t massively satisfied with the result because it could have been a lot better. We definitely made progress over the weekend and learned a lot, though – and it was good to be quicker than some drivers with more experience than me.”

Indeed, despite having to play a defensive game for much of the final, Jordan still came home ahead of some second-year rivals – a laudable accomplishment for his first competitive appearance in the class. As he now prepares for round two at PF International in Lincolnshire in early December, he is revved up to bring away the result to match his evident potential and pace.

“I’m really enjoying KF2,” enthused the Repton School pupil in conclusion. “It’s definitely different to KF3, especially in terms of the power and the front brakes, which make the kart stop quicker too. We had a few problems getting the brakes to work properly at first, but once we had them sorted I got used to them quite quickly.

“I hadn’t really been too sure what to expect or what we would be able to achieve, to be honest; it was a learning curve for the first weekend as we tried various things out, but Stuart did a really good job. Hopefully if everything goes right, we can be as quick as anybody and challenging right up at the front at PF. With more experience in the class and more time in the kart, we should just get better and better – that’s certainly the plan!”
