Jordan Rally 2010, 2 – 4 April 2010, final day.
Patrik Sandell, driving a Red Bull backed Skoda Fabia S2000, has finished fifth on the all-gravel Jordan Rally: round three of the Super 2000 World Rally Championship.
This was despite being delayed twice on some of the roughest roads that the World Rally Championship crews will face all year. On the opening day, Sandell broke a steering arm that stopped him in his tracks on SS3.
He rejoined under the super rally rules, but then came to grief on Friday's SS10 after a rock broke his Skoda's gearbox casing and the car's transmission failed. On the final day of eight stages, Patrik simply concentrated on having a trouble-free run to the finish, which was held on the shores of the Dead Sea: one of Jordan's premier tourist attractions.
The Swede's tireless efforts were all worth it as he ended up scoring a well-deserved points finish on one of the toughest rounds of the season, held in temperatures close to 40 degrees Centigrade. Coming off the back of his fourth place in Sweden, this has got Patrik's Super 2000 World Rally Championship campaign off to a solid start.
"The last time I came to Jordan I gave this rally ten out of ten, but this time it was just a four as it's been so difficult for us!" said Patrik. "It was just a case of survival rather than going quickly.
But I've got to the end now and I've scored some points for the championship, although before the start I had a quite different picture of how it might work out. I pushed a little bit more on the last stage today but I was taking it easy on the others because I was aware of the risk of a puncture. Now we are just looking forward to the next event on our programme, which is New Zealand."
Sandell's car is run by the BRR team, headed up by multiple Austrian champion Raimund Baumschlager. The team principal commented: "This rally was much tougher than everyone expected, but at least we have not come away completely empty handed. The priority for Patrik on the last day was definitely to get to the finish after all the problems we had on the previous two days. Under tricky circumstances, he's done a good job."
Such was the difficulty of the route in Jordan that only one Super 2000 competitor was able to make the finish without resorting to the super rally rules. The fast and flowing gravel of New Zealand should provide a more level playing field for Patrik to show off his talents. The Rally New Zealand takes place from May 7-9 on roads around Auckland.
