Opgave tijdens de 7de chronorit
Inwendige kneuzingen halen Cor Bezemer fysisch onderuit.
“Geen nieuws is goed nieuws”, zo zegt men vaak. Maar in dit geval is dat helemaal niet zo. Een ganse dag niets van het team gehoord, wetende dat Cor, Daniël en Jan zondagmorgen bij het krieken van de dag de resterende 60 km van de 7de chronorit zouden proberen af te werken. Een opdracht die zou moeten lukken, te meer ook daar de MAN ploeg in het eerste zaterdaggedeelte nog erg goed meeging in het vrachtwagenpeloton.
Uiteindelijk meldde Cor Bezemer zondagavond laat vanuit Copiapo de opgave van MAN truck #531. Over en out…
“Zoals gepland hebben we zaterdagnacht, even voorbij WP8, de motor stil gelegd. Balkdonker en dan wordt het echt gevaarlijk”, verduidelijkt Cor Bezemer. “Zondagmorgen stonden we om 6u30 alweer paraat om de zowat 60 resterende kilometers af te werken. Het eerstvolgende “way point” hebben we nog genomen, maar dan raakten we opnieuw vast in het zand.
Ook twee keer bijna op de zij gaan liggen… Maar ondertussen kreeg ik het fysiek alsmaar moeilijker om mee te kunnen. Ik had pijn op mijn longen, maar dacht vooral toch dat die pijn te maken had met de ontelbare schokken die we in de voorbije dagen doorstaan hadden. Kneuzingen, zeg maar… In de voorbije dagen had ik al wat gevoeld, maar je verbijt de pijn en zegt maar niks aan je ploegmaats”.
Uiteindelijk bleek niks nog te lukken en werd vooral de pijn erger, zodat besloten werd om rechtstreeks naar het bivak te rijden en Cor naar de medische antenne te sturen. Die verwezen hem meteen door naar het plaatselijke ziekenhuis waar men een grondige check up uitvoerde. Conclusie: geen probleem met de longen of het hart, maar met een aantal kneuzingen fysisch wél op een dieptepunt… De opgave van team 531 was dan ook een feit.
“Ik vrees dat dit mijn 19de en meteen ook laatste Dakar is geweest ”, tracht Cor Bezemer de ontgoocheling te verbijten. “De koers zoals ze vandaag gereden wordt, is ongelooflijk zwaar geworden en… ik word er evenmin jonger op. Ik wil niet op de zaken vooruit lopen, maar in 2013 gaan ze me hier niet meteen terug zien…”
De ontgoocheling is dan ook groot in het team. “Daniël Cnudde kan er nog enigszins mee leven dat we op die manier uit de wedstrijd moeten stappen”, vervolgt de MAN corijder. “Ook hij voelt als 56-jarige af en toe het gewicht van de jaren opspelen. Jan Van Der Vaet, amper 30 en nog één brok dynamiet, heeft het er begrijpelijk iets moeilijker mee. Maar beslissingen neem je nu eenmaal als team, hoe hard ze ook mogen zijn…”
Cor Bezemer, Daniël Cnudde en Jan Van Der Vaet blijven vanaf maandag het parcours buiten wedstrijd via de assistentieroute volgen om uiteindelijk zondag in Lima af te stappen. Bedoeling was om dit “en fanfare” te doen, maar de sport eist soms zijn onherroepelijke tol…
