Orudzhev takes maiden win in Budapest

16.06.2015: The Hungaroring held the fourth event on the World Series by Renault Calendar

The Hungaroring held the fourth event on the World Series by Renault Calendar, a circuit that is notoriously difficult to over-take on.

The opening day of testing ran well for the Arden Motorsport duo, giving them both a feel with their Arden machine on this Hungarian circuit. Some focussed work overnight on Friday, set them in good stead for Saturday mornings qualifying session.

The track becomes faster throughout the session, leaving it to the drivers to post their best time towards the end of the session. Exactly what Egor and Nicholas did, posting 1:29.077 and 1:29.399 to finish the 30minute session second and seventh respectively.

Lining up on the front row for race one later that morning, Egor stole the lead off the line from Championship Leader Oliver Rowland (Fortec Motorsports) who bogged down on the start. The Russian, who wasn’t without predators on him throughout the race, managed to fend off the attacks to cross the line and take his maiden win in his first FR3.5 season.

The SMP Racing driver also secured the first rookie win of the 2015 Season. Nicholas also had an excellent start from seventh, making his way up to third despite an attacking Matthieu Vaxiviere (Lotus). Unfortunately, this soon ended in a clash on lap six, with the Arden Motorsport driver worse off and forced to retire from the race.

With Sunday’s sessions starting as a fresh approach, the Arden Motorsport drivers repeated their excellent qualifying form on Sunday morning. With just a second between the duo, Egor again secured a front row start for the afternoon race, with Canadian team-mate lining up twelfth.

Egor’s start did not match his performance from the previous day, losing several places the Russian fell back to eleventh where he crossed the line, just missing out on adding to his weekend points tally. Nicholas dropped back off the start and was unable to make any ground, finishing seventeenth.

 Hungaroring, Budapest, Hungary
Track: 4.381 km

  Nicholas Latifi

"It was a a mixed weekend for me. We showed that we can have a good car for Qualifying and also good race pace with Egor putting in fastest laps in race one. I was just unlucky to get caught up in the fight with Vaxiviere in race one that ended the race, where we could have had a decent result.

Sundays performance wasnt ideal but we know what we have to work on for the next round in a few weeks time."

Egor Orudzhev

“On the Friday practice sessions we were trying out new brakes so it was just getting used to these and I also tried to work on my driving. This worked well as we were competitive in the first two sectors, just needing to work on the third.

For qualifying I tried to concentrate on not making any mistakes and improving on the last part of the track, which worked really well at the end so we finished 2nd.

Race one I got a good start and then just held the lead until the end. I got tired and also the tyre degradation didn't help but I managed to defend well and I get my first victory in 3.5 series.

I think that this was the hardest day of my life! I got a great start, but throughout the race, I was being pressured by Oliver, who is an excellent driver. It wasn’t easy! I could see how close he was in my rear-view mirrors, there was no rest and I am completely destroyed, which is something I’ve never felt before! In qualifying, the car was extraordinary and the start was really the key. We have the pace to keep this momentum going.

Sunday's qualifying was even better than the day before. Everything went perfect. I just made on small mistake on one of corners that costed us pole in the end, but was happy enough with finishing the session second.

And second race was difficult. I didn’t make a good start, so lost my place and then I misjudged my breaking point into turn one on the cold brakes so ran wide. After that, the race was more or less over for us. We would have been at points but Dean Stoneman (DAMS) got it wrong out of a pit lane after his pit stop, touched me into turn one so I had to go wide.

It was still a very positive weekend, as we made big improvements in our qualifying pace, so I am looking forward to RedBull Ring to try to do a better job.“
